There is now freeware for Java.

There is run machine that cost 49$ and Netfront at 25$ that come with limited java support.

It's the virtual machine that sits on your device and interprets the Java.

The idea of Java is that you write the program once.. and as long as the target device has a virtual machine on it you can use the program.

The problem is Sun (the Java Maker) don't really like Microsoft. Since few years, Microsoft was force to remove Java from Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I guess the same rules exist for Windows Mobile.

So as long as Sun won't give a Java for Windows Mobile, we will not have a full support of Java on our Devices since Microsoft can't touch Java anymore. :(

What he's trying to say is that MS cannot intergrate Java into their software applications. Sure you can go out and DL the latest version of Java for your PC but MS can't put it there for you. Same with your mobile device.

that's not the case. Microsoft Java Machine had WAY TOO MUCH Security holes in there. Seriously, it was the SWISS CHEESE of the java machines. If you check often the Microsoft security press, 3/4 of the security holes mention "Microsoft java virtual machine".

Microsoft sucks in java. So they just gave the java market to Sun, who is specialised. Someday they'll return, of course..

My guess is that the problem with Sun not providing Java for Windows Mobile is that Sun doesn't see it as a big enough market for them to do the work to port Java to Windows Mobile. Obviously the desktop Windows market is a much different story, so that's why it's available there.

I suspect that this is also why Sun doesn't make Java for the Mac; too small of a market (Apple is doing the port for the Mac). But they do make Java for Linux, and of course for their own OS, Solaris (aka Slowlaris).

Maybe true, but I remember that Sun won in tribunal agains Microsoft about Java, and right after this, Microsoft needed to remove Java from Windows. I think it's effective from Service Pack 4 on Windown 2000 and Service Pack 1 of XP.

Anyway, that said, Microsoft don't work on java anymore.

I'll echo what someone else already said; this is wrong. Microsoft lost the case against them by Sun and part of the agreement is that they had to remove their Java and not provide any Java with Windows or anything else. If you want Java for Windows you have to get it from Sun (or IBM, or Blackdown, etc.). The lack of Microsoft Java on Windows or Windows Mobile has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of their Java implementation.

jhd_axim_lover,

Here is a free method of getting Java Midlets working on the Pocket PC. I personally did the signup that is required by IBM and then downloaded the program.

It works pretty good but with the Axim x50v it runs slower due to the QVGA to VGA support going on. You can "brute force" the file called "j9midp20.exe" to get it to run in full VGA. It runs so much faster but unfortunately the lower menu kind of gets cut off.

Good luck! :approve:

It took me a while to find it on IBM's site, and I unfortunately closed that tab so I don't have the url.

Their list of supported devices list the HP PPCs but not the Dells. Maybe that's why it doesn't work perfectly for you.

Thanks for the links; I did a google search and came up empty handed and thought java on the Axim was a no-go.
