Will someone please help me to understand this ?
I have the A04 English rom ( upgraded from A01 ).
I'm located in Israel. so I purchased the Hebrew\russian\arabic multilanguage support for 40$.
It's not cheap but my PDA works entirely in Hebrew now.
I can switch whenever I want back to English with a single SR. ( takes about 20sec )
I also can work with English orientation and use Hebrew txt\word\excel\note files and files name ( even browsing web pages in Hebrew ).
So why the ROM update ???

Lior

the rom update is for the people who wants native support of the language. what that means is that, the menus and dialogs are running specific language and some utilities like TCPMP has native language support built in (afaik english is 0x0409). this can be a benifit not only to the fact that you can read and write in japanese, but the SIP programs are completely different (i.e. japanese rom supports direct drawing of the letters on the sip panel, as well as traditional and simplified chinese). of course arguably the other utilities like monster SIP and CESTAR would do the job - but from my perspective - it's a complete different purpose.

latin supports, mind you, are different. it's a complete set of different fonts built in or added to the OS, but not a big chunk comparing to some asian language (CJK, for instance).

yep, this works too. but not native support for dialogs and messages.

no. the switch completely erases the operating system already in your pda (english) and replace it with japanese - there is no language switching. of course if your program supports english it will display in english - other wise, everything would mostly in japanese.

and i have to stress one point - this *WILL* Void your warranty.

Going back to English / Installing WM5

Hey Kazuni,

I actually did the same thing with Kaician's guide but using Japanese A01 and English A03. Everything works perfectly fine, although of course my thing's not under warranty anymore.

Question:
Is the process of going back to the English ROM (say English A04) possible? or can I just flash back on the original english backup ROM? (The one that originally came with my x50v, which would then allow me to install A04 normally) I actually don't think I'll do this since I want the Japanese native support but this question's been lingering for a while now.

Also, let's say the Japanese WM5 comes out. (do you know if it's planned?) Do you think we can just install it over the Japanese ROM hack that we did? (basically pretending we're upgrading from a Japanese A01 rom to WM5)

Thanks and cheers to you for writing this!

Don't fear Japanese menus...

Of course, stuff in latin characters will show up in latin characters--they are supported. You'll have no problem writing and reading English documents. Menus and messages are in Japanese--but they're not hard to figure out, especially if you're already familiar with the English version, since everything's in the same place and a lot of things have really obvious icons. And you can always look at the screenshots in your original English instruction manual to figure out how to do something--once you've done it once or twice, you'll remember it. I did this conversion on my X30 and the Japanese system was identical to the English--just by knowing the English system I knew where everything was without trying to read the Japanese.
