File Synchronization - Word, Excel
Coming from a Palm T|E, I was an avid 'Dataviz - Documents to Go' user. It worked fairly well with little complaints (I had the latest version). I have very little experience with Pocket Word and Excel and understand that there are certain limitations but here's my question.
DocsToGo used to let me select any compatible files in their home location and sync with them through Hotsync. My understanding of WM and ActiveSync is that I have to move these files into a dedicated shared folder to have them synch. Meaning that I'd have a whack of unrelated files all sitting in a single directory. Is there a way that I can leave the original file in it's home directory and still be linked for syncing? Also, is there a way to leave a file accessible to others (it's currently on a shared server folder) so that they can modify without needing my PC on the network?
Thanks for any input.

Can I for instance, stick a 'shortcut' in the 'Pocket_PC My Documents' folder directed to a file in it's home directory location. It seems to sync the PC version to the PPC but not the PPC to the original file?

As you have found it doesn't work.
One way around it is to put the file in your PPC MyDocuments folder and the link in the other directory on your desktop.
Another way is to use a third party application that can sync files from anywhere on your PC to anywhere on your Axim. I use MightySync - it is linked in my MyPDA.

Yeah, that seems like too much work. I liked the way Docs to Go did it but will look up MightySync. Where did you find that and was it freeware? DOH, just read the last of your statement, I will check your PDA. Not much for the PPC's seems to be free?
I assume that if I did attempt to use shortcuts for files put in the sync folder that I would only be able to sync them with files on the main memory of my PPC and not on a SD card, correct?
BTW - thanks for your response.

I've been using "my computer" to move files between desktop and PPC. Note that they are just word docs, or PPC exe's.
So far I have had no issue with it. However, I normally place it on my CF card in a sub directory. I also only do this typically with just my desktop at home, and on rare occasion, work computer.
I wonder if any drawbacks may exist with this method...

Also, moving files using a USB reader for a CF or SD card does the trick. I've done that as well.
I take no credit for that idea, as I got it from one of the sticky threads.

Yeah, see the issue is that I carry a couple hundred documents with me when I'm away from the desk and often end up modifying a dozen or so at a time while out and about. I can't be moving them back and forth everytime I get back to my desk and trying to remember which ones have been changed on the PC vs. the PPC would be impossible. I need the files on both platforms and modifications to update both as well. Thanks for the input though. I do use this method for other types of file transfer of course.

I wonder if you save these docs in the upload folder, if you can set the upload folder to not erase the files, and have a directory structure in place in the upload folder.
Just a thought. I have to look into this as well, as I'm setting myself up for doing the same exact type thing as you.

Well, I can tell you that I've already downloaded the program 'MightySync' that Rob1303 mentions above and it looks perfect. If I can figure out how to sync files from my network, it's a done deal. It's only $5.95 so it's not so bad and it looks pretty solid. Have to use it for the trial period of 15days before deciding. Good luck!

When I tried it right now, the link seems to be working fine. Try this link, this is the one that goes to MobSync download page.

Thanks. It looks like this has changed to a 'not so free' s/w?

Nope. It is still TOTALLY FREE. MobSync ver 0.9.4 is as free as it can be.

You'll find there are certain things - like files - that were much easier and MUCH less of a hassle on the palm.
I remember using WordSmith and it would sync up just fine (and used a special folder to create a backup). We're hoping ActiveSync 8 will be a bit more efficient.
