Novice wireless syncing question

I have a new X50v after using about 6 Palm handhelds over the past 7 years. So please be patient with my ignorance.

What I am trying to do is use my integrated b/g Wifi on an HP laptop to sync with my handheld. Is this possible without a router and without a dial-up/cable/dsl internet connection (only a hotel's wireless network)?

I read the link http://wifi.aximsite.com/ and I renamed the ID, enabled NetBios, selected "My Work Network" everywhere, etc. But I still cannot sync wirelessly. There seems to be options on the PC ActiveSync menu that are greyed out that would be relevant (e.g., Server and Wireless Schedule).

Any help would be appreciated.

I think you are using version 4 of ActiveSync. if so, uninstall it and use v3.8.

what you are trying to do is create an ad-hoc network. without setting an IP address for the latop and the Axim, you will need to get a wireless access point.

Thanks Mike! Were wireless features removed from ActiveSync v4.0? Would I need an access point/router even if I had v3.8. I assume integrated wireless capability in a laptop would not provide an access point.
