Question Sync with Mozilla Thunderbird??

Greetings Aximsite ppls,

I freely admit to being an Axim newbie (my x50v is only a couple of weeks old, already on second unit after power problems on the first, but this one has worked perfectly out of the box), and have found this forum to be useful for accessories and also some software bits and pieces, so thought you may be able to help.

For numerous reasons I choose not to use any more Micro$oft software at home than I need to, hence I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird for email, but have yet to find any software to allow me to sync the contacts with my new baby.

Any thoughts?

The reason for the new Axim is my old PDA (Psion Revo) died, and after years of faithful service too. Fortunately all was backed up!!!

Cheers

Teague

I think there is no way to sync contacts with Mozilla, nor is there a way to sync a calendar, todo list or anything else. I myself use Outlook for everything (not Express!) on my notebook too, so I don't have this problem.

However, I have a friend who also prefers Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird over Microsoft software. However, he still has Outlook installed. He does not use it for mailing, only to sync with his PDA (contacts, todo list, calendar, etc)

Outlook is included with your Axim. You already gave Microsoft your money for it, so you may as well use it.

Greetings ex revo user. sorry about your loss. Anyway, you might want to install outlook for pim syncing. you don't havc to use it for emai. And you've already paid for your copy.

you can pop3 to your email server and get your mail that way.

I read that there are some conduits under development that will allow you sync with Thunderbird, but nothing completed as of now . . .

One big, big problem is that Thunderbird has no synching ability built in. I believe Sunbird the calender program can synch with a Palm but that is it. Intellisync can do Outlook, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes, and Groupwise. The Mozilla developers have not even addressed this area in Mozilla Mail or Thunderbird.

Well, I think the reason that extension developers have been holding off on doing a sync plugin is due to the nasty Thunderbird mail database. It's based on the oooold Netscape database from what I know.

I think in the next major revision of Thunderbird (version 2?), the database will be changed to a much friendlier format.

It's being used on the Axim, just not on my home PC, mostly due to the number of attacks against it, hence I have never used it at home, and have always gone for a 3rd party email client.

Bad news for me that Mozilla doesn't sync, but I'll bear with it and hope the future brings about some of the "vapour ware" being discussed.

Cheers guys

Just don't use it for mail then.

Personally, I haven't had a virus in 4 years straight of using Outlook, with several different e-mail accounts, most without any antivirus software installed (only my work computers had any AV). The key is turning the preview pane off in your Inbox, as well as not being a moron and opening random attachments (Like my relatives who usually send at least one virus my way monthly).

And even if they eventually get a workaround for Thunderbird, 3rd party PIMs will still probably have issues with it.

I really have never heard of any major Outlook attack...certainly not on your home PC. My computer at home has had Outlook for 6 1/2 years at least. As the computer is always on and online and never suffered a single attack or virus...I don't see where there's any risk.

I use Outlook at work and Thunderbird at home. Might want to join the T-Bird forums and poke around to see what the status is on development.
