How does the X50v measure up? (vs. LOOX 720 and iPAQ hx4705)

I've had a palm o.s. Tungsten E for over a year and a half and have finally decided to switch over to the pocket PC. My question is, how does the AXIM X50v size up to two other palms, the LOOX 720 and iPAQ hx4705. From what I understand it is smaller, lighter, has a shorter battery life, a faster processor, and is supported in the U.S. (unlike the LOOX 720). Are there any other killer points I should know that can close the case and let me click the buy button for the Axim? I am really tempted by some of the features on the other models and am having a hard time deciding. I know there is no perfect palm so since I'll be mainly using it for games, movies, music, wi-fi, and documents for school, what we be the best choice for my situation? Thanks in advance!

The HP has some advantages: better battery life, more included software (some really useful stuff, too). Costco, with their wonderful return policy, sells HP. Another plus! It also has a built in screen cover (although the cover is kind of clunky). The stylus is kind of cheesy. It has 128 megs of RAM, vs. 64 for the Dell.

The Dell is smaller, sleeker and easier to hold. It does have shorter battery life (although an extended battery is available).

My main reason for going with the Axim was that I hate that funky touchpad on the HP and the Dell offered much more bang for the buck. My Axim cost more than $150 less than the HP, and I got lots of goodies (extra battery, extended warranty, etc). I also like that the Dell is much smaller, with better buttons.

I love the DELL and would buy it again. But, I think the HP would be a fine choice as well.

i couldn't afford a vga device but the most important points for me if i had to choose among those woule be:

X50V: vga output and a lot of rom for wm5 (great for pluging to a monitor or projector)
hp: the great battery life.
loox: the usb host.(plug a usb hub and there you go hooking tons of devices)

my 2cts.

Loox >> x50v
- Better Screen (although the x50 is by no means bad)
- More Powerful infra-red
- USB Host
- 128mb RAM
- VOIP Speakers
- Better made?
- Longer Battery Life
- WM5 will be free?

Although, obviously you are asking on an Axim forum.. what answer do you think you will get... Hehe

There are 2 reasons I went with the X50v over the Loox

1. More stylish and better form factor
2. It is a pain to order the Loox overseas.

There is one reason I didn't go with the iPAQ

1. There is not iPaq!! Only a Jornada in disguise! I always hated Jornadas.

LMAO!!!!

By the way Gates...the 4705 only has 64RAM and 128ROM...just like the 50v.

The hp has a 4" screen, but the x50v has a 16mb 3d vid card built in.
the 50v has processor adjustment
the hp case body is metal

The X50v is GREAT for video with Betaplayer, thanks to its graphics chip. You can run it in powersave and get flawless 640x480.

I chose the X50v over the HP because it was considerably less expensive, I got the extended battery, and it was smaller with a better form factor (I too didn't like the touch pad). I've had an X50v pretty much since they've came out, and not had so much as a hiccup with mine. Hope this helps.

But even in full power mode on a Loox you can play 640x480 for longer than powersave in x50.

Yup, you're right about the RAM.

In all honesty, I like most of the features of the HP better. I just couldn't never live with that touchpad.

Another option to consider in terms of high end pocket pcs - the Asus Mypal.

That's kind of not the point. Headroom is always good. Theoreritcally it should allow the flawless playback of a higher bitrate file using the accelration; the video capabilities in raw terms are nearly double. In practical terms, however, most videos will be encoded optimized for either of these devices.

For the original poster, another area of difference in built-in nonviolatile memory, which I personally find useful. And of course the big one -- price. There is no small difference there.

The x50v is the right choice if you would like to upgrade to wm2005. The 16mb dedicated graphics chip will bring it into a league of it's own.

Only consider a loox or MyPal if you're absolutely desperate for either a usb host or camera.

I really appreciate all that each of you have said and have weighed everything equally and am starting to lean towards the AXIM X50v. The HP is starting to seem out of the ballpark with the price and the dell is looking really sweet. With an excellent processor and the ability to upgrade the battery, since I'm mostly looking at games, movies, and music would I be ok with the dell? I'm kind of reluctant to have to order a LOOX from Europe being a U.S. resident... Any further input is still greatly needed in wrapping this case up! Thanks. Also the MyPal is out of the question, no WM5 upgrade... In addition, what does VOIP do? I don't plan on making calls or anything but what exactly does it help with? Thanks again!
