Charging voltage for X50v (and X30)

Any electricity experts out there? The AC adaptor for the X50v and the X30 are the same part--output is 5.4 volts. Well I just noticed that the Dell-approved Belkin travel kit charging adaptors (for car cigarette lighter and for AC) are a little different for the two units. The adaptors for the X50v are 5.4 volts output and the adaptors for the X30v are 5.5 volts output. Why the difference?

Hey dude got any spare electrons?

I am not sure why Belkin would have different voltages, but I own both an X50v and an X30. I have used both power adaptors with the X50v and I have an iGo I bought at work (Radioshack) that I used to power the X50v for my most recent road trip (18 hours). The iGo has various tips and on their site tip B07 is only recommended for the X30, it is the same as the end on the ac adaptor that comes from dell. I just popped the X50v adaptor on it and away I went, no problems at all. I don't know if this is a direct answer to your question, but it is all the info I have. I hope it helps.

Consumer electronic devices are built with a certain (often quite generous) level of voltage tolerance. The 0.1V difference in this case will have zero impact on the operation of the device.

I did some more searching and found that the thread http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&highlight=5.4 is very informative.
It sounds like the X50v adaptors would work with the X30 but maybe not consistently the other way around (the Belkin X30 adaptors are rated at 700 and 1000 mA, whereas their X50v adpators are rated at 2000 mA).
Thanks for pointing out that 5.5v vs. 5.4v is virtually meaningless in this situation.

it should work ok. most of this stuff has about a 10% tolerance anyway.

I know very little, but strongly suggest you check out the sticky

Specs are for 5V at 500mA. Not enough to power the x50v and charge it at the same time if the battery is low, per the above discussion.

But do I have to worry about the 2 amp rating? Anybody?

You need to get as close to 5.4V DC Output as you can get.
Keep in mind that OVER that voltage is NOT a good thing.

The mili-amp Output of the Dell Adapter is 2410MaH. You need to get up as close to that as you can.
.....it is safe to go over that MaH amount, by any factor.
The charging circuit will only draw what it needs from that level.
Anything over 2410MaH amount will cause no harm.
(OK, I wouldn't try something like 14bagillionMaH).

Anything below 2410Mah, will only cause the charging to take longer.

Summary:

OVER: 5.4V DC Output = BAD......bad, bad, bad, BAD!!!
OVER: 2410Mah Output = OK :approve:

UNDER: 5.4V DC Output = Longer Charging Time
UNDER: 2410Mah Output = Longer Charging Time
