Charging voltage

I have the docking station for my pc, but needed a charger for upstairs. I bought a walmart ac universal charger rated for several voltages including 4.5 and 6v at 1600mah. Is the 6v setting too high? The docking station is rated at 5.4 v at 2450mah. The dell 1100 bat is rated at 3.7 volts. I believe USB ports are rated at +4.75 to +5.25 volts or nominally 5 volts.

It is my understanding that 6v is too high and may cause damage. 4.5v is safe and will work although your current level is lower than optimal and will result in a slow charge. Please post if it works out ok.

6v may work, it may not. If it doesn't, the Axim's internal charging circuit should trip, and the device won't charge. 4.5 volts may be too little, resulting in the same thing. 5 volts should work well, 5.5 would be better, if you can swing it. My advice would be to buy a second Dell charger. They're not that expensive ($10) and it's simpler than trying other power supplies.

Those universal adapters are garbage. They do not provide a well regulated and filtered power output. The excess 'noise' on the DC voltage might be an issue.
The voltages on these cheapo power packs are usually from 15% to 25% higher than the printed setting, as it is specified for full load.
Get someone with a voltmeter to measure the voltage before plugging it in to your Axim.
Personally, I wouldn't take the chance (unless you've got the customercare support).
Now, if you live in Toronto, Go to Sayal Electronics. They have brand new, surplus, regulated 5V 2A adapters for around $3. I use them for several of my PDAs including my X50v
