Preventing data and app loss

Hi,

Sometimes I let my Axim 50v's battery run down. Each time this happens I have to reload my x50v with my contacts, other personal information, and apps. Is there any way I can prevent this loss? I thought the x50v had an area on non-volitle RAM.

Thanks,

jerry

It does.. but contacts and Apps are not saved there (this will change with WM5)

You may want to get Sprite Backup (try an aximsite search on sprite). It works great and I bought it to solve the problem :approve:

Hmm. What I need is to be able to use the Axim whether I can get to a computer or not. I might have the unit off for a month and then need it to work right now. Can I move my apps, contacts, etc to my SD card? I have a 1 gbyte SD card with over 200 MBytes free.

Sprite will back your axim up to the SD card... every night at 11pm (or whenever you choose) automatically. No need for a PC to do the backups.

You can also use the built in backup util.., but you have to remember to do it yourself and i didn't find it as reliable

Actually, it's the ROM (not the RAM) that is non-volatile, which is why you never lose your operating system if a hard reset occurs. As psionandy pointed out, Sprite backup would be your best solution. It has a self-executing restore feature which allows you to just click on a file (stored in memory card or Built-in-Storage so it's safe in the event of a hard reset) to restore everything you had from before the hard reset. No connection to a PC is required. :approve:

Even if you install your apps on SD/CF card the registry entries are still stored in RAM which will get wiped out when the battery runs down. Also, every program copies some kind of application files into the 'Windows' folder which again resides on RAM, which again gets wiped out.

If you find that standard 1100mAH battery runs down in one month when you are not using it, then perhaps you should consider a 2200mAH battery. This will allow you to retain the data for a longer period of time, but again its a finite amount of time.

Or you can wait for WM5.0 release in October and then you will not be having this problem anymore.

Or as 'psionandy' suggested use Sprite Backup to create the self-extracting backup file and every time when the batter runs down, just restore your whole setup from this backup file.

I had read in some post that it is considered to be bad for the battery's life-span if you allow it to drain completely.

You can create a normal backup file with dell or the sprite backup. In a month, you will charge it up and reload your backups and it will be just like the way it is now.

Completely discharging a LiIon Battery is not a good thing to do, it will shorten its Life Expectancy.

You should keep it connected to a charger and topped-off whenever you aren't using it.

HERE's how I have my Sprite Premium configured.

In my BIS I only have a most basic backup. Just enough to get my Axim back in a useable state, for me. If I were to have to use the OEM Configuration of the Axim......I would have to revert back to Complete Newbie Stage. I have no idea how to navigate in an OEM PPC Configuration.

My "Basic Configuration" contains User Info, SnoopSoft DashBoard (configured) and GigaBar (configured). These are the changes to the OEM Config that I have used on every PPC I've owned. Like I said, without them......I AM Lost! So I know I can always get back to something I can use, but since I rarely remove my SD Card, should I need to, I can always go back one or two days for a Restore.

And I copy my SD Card (via a card reader), to my PC and Laptop once a week.

Never had to use it yet, on my X5 400/A04. But just happy to know it's there if I need it.

Sprite Backup Pocket PC Edition

...No "Demo", trial Full Function for 30 Days...
.....Then Buy It, or not.....
