Just Curious

I see all the software you can buy for these Axim's. I'm just curious, how much money are you guys spending on software alone. So far I haven't paid a dime for any software, and I'm still enjoying my Axim.

Personaly I spend very little. I am a big fan of free. Actually I have not found a need intense enough to cause me to buy a specail application......I did have to buy the software to sync with Lotus notes but the Company paid for that becasue it was a business need.

It is pretty subjective. What some might consider a lot, others may not. I would say while I am a huge fan of free (and some of the best is) there is other things worth paying for as well. Guess it is all in what you are looking for.

What programs are worth paying for? As FlyACL said, it is highly subjective, and depends on what you use your PDA for. TextMaker, PlanMaker, ClearVue, Resco Photo Viewer, Resco Explorer, Spb Pocket Plus, Spb Diary, Spb Weather, WisBar 2, SplashID, iSilo, RepliGo, Pocket Music, GPS navigation software, are pretty much mandatory for me. Excepting a few noteable exceptions like BetaPlayer, CabInstall, OzVGA, Skype, Spb Benchmark, some games etc. I can't seem to find equivalent free software. I looked for a while but gave up. Besides, given the choice of paying $20 for a piece of software and spending the rest of the weekend with family and friends, or spending the weekend trying to find and evaluate freeware, what whould you rather do?

True. But all that software you just rattled off had to cost you a bundle. I'm jealous...

Yeah, but then you don't have to buy all that software. You buy what you need. Personally, I don't need Textmaker, Planmaker, Clearvue, etc. so I haven't spend money on it.

Normally, I start with a freeware program, like for launching applications I started with cLaunch. After using for some time, I found it did not have couple of features that I wanted. So I went for SBSH's iLauncher. For calendar plug-in, I started with the freeware Today Calendar (or something of that sort). Found it lacking in couple of areas, and I went for SBSH's PocketBreeze.

For closing applications, I use the freeware MagicButton and I am pretty happy with it. For registry editing, I still use the freeware PHM Regedit. You can get the keys that needs to be edited for any feature and you can just using PHM to directly go and edit it. But if you are not comfortable with Registry editing, then there is no point in trying the freeware route and messing up your Axim. Its much better to spend couple of dollars and get Tweaks2K.

Software that I paid for are SBSH's PocketBreeze, ContactBreeze, iLauncher and PocketWeather (total cost $15). Sprite Backup (total cost $23). eWallet Professional for PC and PPC (total cost $4). I also have OCN4 for GPS navigation (total cost after deducting cost of BT-338 reciever $100). So my total software cost is $142, but if I remove OCN4 from it then the cost is $42. Not a bad price to pay, considering what I am getting out of those softwares.

I have only one or two freeware programs loaded. The rest, I have bought and am glad I di. I have probably spent $200.00 or more on software.

I'm going to hate myself at the end of this post... but

Sprite premium ($30) and its saved me far more than that in time and stress

Tomeraider & windows version ($30.. although it's changed from a must have down to a nice to have)

SBSH Pocket Breeze/contact breeze/iLauncher can't remember how much.. use the aximsite discount for PB (50% off) and then got a 30% discount on CB and iL as i bought them at the same time.

Clearvue suite (came with VGA out cable).

Aximsite contribution (technically not software) - Aximsite has increased my Axims performance by at least 500%. If some software could do that I'd gladly pay for it. So I've lumped it in with my software costs :)

If you want to be 100% freeware you can. There's some amazing stuff there. But i feel i've got more value out then I put in.

I've written 3 applications I use myself in C++. I've bought 3 programs, All-In Texas Hold'em, Engineering Calculator for Fluid Dynamics, and iGuidance. The rest are freeware, and one, Achieve-It, I actually won in a contest here on Aximsite. So I've really spent very little in software (other than the GPS software of course). I'd like to be able to take more time to develop some more apps. Maybe in the next year or so I can try my hand at some more challenging programs.

Spread out over time and give how much I use my Axim, I would say software has been "cheap".
