Ok, think back to the days of PCs and Windows 3.1 or DOS.
If you could stop a driver from loading in your CONFIG.SYS that would save you some RAM but it would have no effect on your hard disk space.
If you could stop the driver from loading in your CONFIG.SYS and you could delete the file then that would save you RAM and hard drive space.
Well PocketPCs aren't like PCs because RAM and hard drive are interconnected.
A gain in RAM equals a gain in available storage space and a gain in storage space equals a gain in available RAM.
Someone cleverly discovered that if they overwrote the Odyssey client file in the Program Files\Funk Software folder that they received in increase in RAM.
Either they or someone else wrongly assumed that this was because the file was being "deleted" from the ROM and this led them to continue on and overwrite the same file in the Windows folder to supposedly get a 'double' gain.
But the 'delete' assumption was wrong. Files in ROM can not be deleted.
Overwriting the file in the Funk Software folder stops the client from loading just like stopping a driver in your CONFIG.SYS.
Yes, you do get a gain in RAM but no, you don't get an increase in storage space (except that you do because it's a PocketPC and the two are interconnected).
Overwriting the same file in the Windows folder does not delete the file and it does not prevent anything from loading into RAM so there is no benefit whatsover from overwriting it.
In truth it is wasting RAM because you are creating a new file in RAM that serves absolutely no purpose.
If you need the Odyssey client you want to leave both files alone.
If you don't need the Odyssey client then you could overwrite the one in the Funk Software folder only.
If you overwrite one or both then your WiFi will still work but you will not be using the Odyssey client.

Also, if you are trying to use odyssey client to connect to a LEAP wireless network, you may need to upgrade to odyssey client 4.0 from www.funk.com . My odyssey client WOULD NOT WORK at my univesity with sysco routers

Why is that program so huge anyway? 2MB? It doesn't seem to do a heck of a lot, if you count features. Most programs under 300Kb are orders of magnitude more functional.
Rightly or wrongly, I have interpreted this as a sign of poor programming which makes me more than happy to delete it from the system.
I understand that it is needed to connect to certain wireless networks. Dell should have provided a way to install the program, instead of building it right into ROM.
So, if I want to save ram that's used for running programs I can't just remove the odClientCeAutoLaunchSmart file from the \Windows\StartUp folder? I have to overwrite the Odyssey client file in the Program Files\Funk Software folder?
I overwrote the Odyssey client with a file that had just a space and newline and my "in use" memory for programs went down to 12.09 MB from 12.98 MB.
Not very impressive as far as I can tell.
It seems easier to always install programs into the Built In Storage and use the Memory settings thing to decrease the RAM used for storage. I have mine set at 13.76 MB allocated for storage and 47.99 MB allocated for running programs.
I've only had my Axim for a short while, maybe as time goes by the need for more internal storage will become an issue.

Eh, in case we do that, as owner's of the x50, do we have to pay for that program or are updates included? If so, where to download them?
Thanks,

Thanks for the clarity on this unclear topic.
So if we ARE using Odyssey, is there anything else we can get rid of on the Dell side? Any of the Dell WLAN config files or drivers? Or do we need to keep all the Dell stuff AND the Odyssey software installed if we are using the Odyssey Client.
(I might do some experimenting if someone wants to point me to some files that might be unnecessary.)

You have to pay for the program. you can download the odyssey client for pocket pc at www.funk.com dell did not seem to care when i called about why they ship an outdated version of odyssey installed. You can try and call dell and see what they can do, but you will likely have to pay the 50 bucks to funk at www.funk.com

50 bucks for a piece of software that other people try to get rid off? Gee that's expensive.. Thanks for your answer :)
