I'd like to know also. I can't take the chance of blowing up a motherboard and don't need the ability to charge by USB.

Along the same lines, can someone recommend a cable that will allow me to charge in home, car and usb? I know that there are tons out there but for the USB charge aspect of it, I cant have it blowing the motherboard either. Should I just spend the 39 bucks and buy it off Dell or is there something as equally safe but cheaper?

I bought the Belkin 3-in-1 at Dell.com. It is supposed to let you sync, charge in the car, and charge at home. Charges fine, doesn't sync at all. In short, give it a pass.
I called Dell and complained. They refunded my money, and then I bought the Dell sync cable for $15. It works fine each time.
If you are just interested in sync, go with the Dell cable.

I bought this retractable Sync-N-Charge Cable for my X50v (Free shipping too):
http://pdaextreme.com/product_info.php?products_id=210
While the X50v is connected to the PC and turned-on for use, it does NOT charge. But once I turned the X50v Off, then the charge light comes on and the unit charges.
I also have the Boxwave VersaCharger that's a combo A/C & Car Power adapter that works with the sync-n-charge:
http://www.boxwave.com/products/versacharger/index.htm
Hope that helps.

I have the dell cable, works fine, and only charges when the unit is off. shouldn't be much of a problem unplugging it before the ax starts to charge. I use my inspiron to charge the ax when I don't have AC around, and it seems to work fine.

Does it get power from the USB cable or do you have to plug in the AC adapter to the cable for it to charge the Axim?

I just got this cable; it was sitting on my porch when I got home. Same problem here, no sync. When I plug the usb end into my usb port I get the sound from Windows that a usb device was connected, and the sound from ActiveSync that the device is connected, but the round "connected" icon in the ActiveSync window stays gray instead of turning green. After I disconnected the cable I had to do a soft reset in order to be able to turn the unit off.

I'm fairly sure that it's still drawing the same amount of current as before, but now it's using it to power the Ax instead.. If I had a cable to take apart I would test this, but I don't, so it's just a theory :-)

Actually with a sync OR charge cable as I prefer to call them the Axim draws virtually 0mA from the PC when the Axim is on, and when the Axim is off the maximum I have seen is 460mA.
See http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=93653 for info on how I converted a sync AND charge cable to a sync OR charge cable.

I'm still fighting with this stupid Belkin 3-in-1 cable. I called Dell hoping they'd offer me a refund but instead they sent me a replacement. The replacement mostly works except that the screen flickers when it's plugged into the usb port on my PC. I realized that the flickering is the screen brightness switching between the "On external power" and "On battery power" brightness settings.
Other than that it seems to sync ok and it works fine for recharging.
