Universal Memory Leak?

I have found that there seems to be a memory leak on my X50v no matter what program I run. I have spb pocket plus and have the x button set to close, so I know that programs aren't "smart minimizing", but I notice that not matter what program I run, after I close it I have less available program memory. This is particularly annoying with Morphgear as it requires a lot of RAM. If I do a soft reset I have about 47% of my program memory free acording to my spb icon, but if I run any program and then close it that drops to 40% or less. In order to run something memory hungry like Morphgear I have to do a soft reset before I run it EVERY time!

So my question is...is this normal? How much program memory do most of you have allocated? I have about 35MB allocated, at least until windows readjusts the slider. Does anybody else have this problem? Are there any solutions?

Nope, no solutions other than soft-reset. Nearly every program has some amount of memory leak in it. It all depends on how well the developer has done his coding/testing.

If you have any program that needs lots of memory, then it is always better to do a soft-reset before starting the program. In my case, I normally do a soft-reset before starting OCN, just so that OCN gets the maximum available memory.

I believe Windows would do a better job of memory management. The OS should reclaim all memory when a program exits. For PDA, I don't think memory leak is a big issue because it's not really used for critical jobs.

just did a search for 'memory leak
and this came up.

I have a similar issue.

Soft reset then shows 5.58mb storage and 22.1mb program

now i had some progs like ilauncher, vbar and pocket weather running in today screen, and memory leaking about 100kb every couple of seconds, so after about 10 minutes I have: 5.58Mb storage and about 6Mb program...

now I removed EVERYTHING, so it's default windows today screen, and a soft reset and same thing, after 10-20 mins, has 6mb/6mb left.

a04 rom

anyone know of a process list application? like ctrl/alt/del in windowsxp and you have a 'program'list and a 'process' list, that actually show what 'real' processes are running to see what process is causing leak...?

In addition to memory leaks taking up precious memory, don't forget temp files from apps as well as PIE. To check running processes, try MemMaid, which is also a very effective cleaner utility.

yes I know all that, but 20 minutes run time to run out of program space and needs reset?... comon, something's got to be up with that.

where is a 'REAL' task manager with process lists?...

I suppose that you don't need any task manager in that case. What you might need is WM5. I hope that it won't have such issue. I'm tired of having only 10 mb of free RAM.
As it seems to me this is the problme of WM2003, as this issue appears on my MPx220, which has almost no software installed compared to my Axim.

I ended up doing something a little different. I reassigned the right-most hardware button (the one with the little house on it) on the front to "Home" - pressing it now brings up the Home screen. I then renamed "memory" as "1memory" and "power" as "2power" so they float up to the top. Now I can hit the Home button, bring up Memory easily, then go to Running Programs in order to shut down programs I'm no longer using. Just a couple of key/stylus strokes and I have as much memory available as possible without a soft reset.

FYI, when you start Home, at the bottom left above "about" is "all". Select "main" so the system functions are available and select "memory" without invoking it (press on it then slide the stylus off the icon before you lift it). Once "main" (anything other than "all") is selected, another menu shows up on the bottom, Options, which includes "rename".

Y'all take care,
Mike R.

well I hope that WM5.0 is going to be better with memory, cause it's a pain to s-reset every hour...

m$ strikes again with dodgey unfinished OS

weird cause a mate of mine has an asus mypal 730w and quite a few today items, and his memory sits their and doesn't move.

I worked out if I sit in the memory app it reduces at a rate of about 8kb every second, ie If I leave it in the cradle it starts out with 23Mb and reduces to 0.1Mb ( doesnt go any lower because it locks up) after about 50 minutes, pain in the bombom when I'm driving long distant listening to music & GPS'ing my way around, I have to pull over, pull device out of cradle, soft reset, load up apps and go again.

maybe I should just buy a dedicated mp3 player and a dedicated GPS travel system, and leave the pda to contacts & tasks...
