Okay I gave it a few weeks...but this equalizer still is WAY to loud, even on the lowest possible setting. I have good quality headphones and at this rate I'll be deaf by 30. Am I doing something wrong?
Well I personally like the volume... must be because I'm a teenager ;)
Well guys, if it's too loud, consider using a program like mortplayer (search with google), it's freeware and has an equalizer, pre-amp or however this is called, with that thing you can lower the volume dramatically...
hope it helps,
cmdkeen
Which program are you guys having the loudness problem with? If it's Betaplayer or TCPMP just add Loudness to Betaplayer as search terms here and you'll find the answer from the developers own SIP's. He goes by picard_beta if you'd rather do a username search.
Personally I've been doing the same as Xanlexian for a couple of years now but not because of volume problems but because my Sony DJV700's have a straight plug instead of a right angle one. I've had way to many devices sounds and speakers stop working because I've bumped a straight plugged cable into something.
I actually got a call from Leonard at PocketPCTechs when I sent in an iPaq for evaluation and repair. He'd never seen anything like the damage that was done to the headphone jack from a little cord catch incident on the handrail of a bus.
Anyway back on topic... What are the programs that are to loud again?

I am sure there is a setting you are missing. The guys and gals here should be able to help you! Not to steal another's name but "Don't Panic"
I use GSplayer and Windows Media Player both x50mix. I find that GSplayer is very loud and I generally listen at the lowest audible setting (about 7). Windows Media player doesn't sound as loud. I still prefer GSplayer though.

I don't mind change as long as I'm not around when it happens.

I use 40iplay and use one of the six equalizers to drop the output WAY down. If a great song is running, I'll shift equalizers but if I'm in the office and it's very quiet - back to #6 and depressed output levels.
I have to agree. My X50v, even with the X50mixer and even using programs with built-in preamps and mixers(like MortPlayer), is way louder than it should be.
Now granted, the lowest I can get the sound is not harmful to my ears, but it is higher than I would prefer to listen to it in quiet environments, like my work or the library.
Imagine driving a car that cannot go slower than 40 mph unless it's stopped entirely. That's the sound on my X50v.

I'm glad you posted this - I've had the same problem, but I took another look at GSPlayer. Go to Tool, Effects, Equalizer. There's a 'Preamp' setting at the bottom of the page; click the Equalizer checkbox and you can control overall volume with the Preamp setting!

use pre-amp settings in gsplayer and you can tweak sound to your taste
You can do the same with mortplayer as mentioned above by cmdkeen using the pre-amp and if thats still too loud you can knock the eq freq bars down equally and make it literally a whisper. I just realised this so thx m8 :)
