X50v How-to WiFi at McDonalds?

I was unsuccessful at getting "connected" at two mcdonalds this weekend with my X50v, so I guess I need a detailed 1,2,3:

Here is what I did:
1) double clicked the wifi icon (lower right of today screen)
2) clicked Setting (in WLAN Utility)
3) Selected Internet, then "Dell Axim X50 WLAN Wireless Adapter" (which was 5th from the top in list)
4) Selected Use server-assigned IP, then OK
5) Window popped with "Adapters: The next time will have the new settings...", selected OK
6) Selected OK from Configure Network Adapters
7) Selected Turn On, "New Network Detected" popup appeared
8) "Internet" was default selected, Pressed "Connect"
circle and arrows on the antenna icon appear
9) Pressed OK to close WLAN util
10) Brought up Pocket IE, typed in google.com and pressed arrow
11) "The page you are looking for cannot be found"

I reopenned WLAN Utility and see:
"linksys Connected" in the list box
Networks to access: "All Available"
checked: Auto connect to non-preferred

12) Clicked on "linksys connected" and
"Config Wireless Net" pops up
NetName: linksys
Connects to: The Internet
checked: This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc)
I selected Network Key Tab
Don't remember anymore: What should I see here?

I'd appreciate more help, too. I've been able to connect to one public wi-fi spot but not any others and darned if I know what I did different there. There is just such a confusion of set up screens with gobbdleygook acronyms that mean nothing to me. AximX30 could get finicky but I could use it at public wifi places most times.

Is there some programmer out there who can write a program for those of us who want to get on public wifi with the AximX50v as easily as we do with our laptops when security is not a concern for us. I'd pay good money for that program.

Or, like the poster above, some clear step by step instructions. One post I saw said the Dell untility to use was in the bottom right corner. Well that icon on my today screen is for the keyboard options. I've tried to use scan command on Odyssey and it shows a network but then as I try to go thru configuration steps is says no signal, what gives with that?

Really, really frustrating.

This is for Tivoli, are you a subscribed member for mcdonalds wireless? If its like the Mcdonalds in Chicago which its HQ is its a paid subscription and not free same with Barnes and Nobles and Borders book store. Panera is free as well is most public libraries. The other problem you may face is encrypted WEP connection, in that case it will show you connected but you wont be able to download anything unless you get the wep key.

Wi-Fi at McDonalds

Keep trying to open different web pages and you will get a default page that asks how you want to pay for access. It worked for me on about the third page. As with web access in hotels and other places, the authentication page will load up in stead of whatever page you requested and when you have set up an account, the pages will load as normal. At least that's how it works in Metro Atlanta.

Isn't the network at McD's a pay network? anyway, when connecting to a wifi router you don't want to check the ad-hoc box. that is for connecting to another pda or pc directly. If it is a pay hotspot then you should open the browser and it should automatically go to the pay page. some don't work that way and i guess that is a function of the browser. try to find a free one if you can. I have found free ones at Starbucks but i think even some of them are pay sites.

From http://www.mcdonalds.com/wireless/general_info.html

"Connectivity and/or usage fees may apply and be required for Wi-Fi Services. Access details, fees and availability subject to change without notice."

I think McDonald's uses Wayport at some of their locations local to me. Not 100% sure (I've only been on free hotspots so far), but if this works like their service at hotels, you'll need to log on to their website from your axim and pay for the service before using it.

From the same page:

"Our local telecom partners provide high quality Wi-Fi services to you, most of the time through several convenient options for how to connect; promotional coupons, prepaid cards, credit card (on-line) or subscriptions. There is usually a customer support number to the local Wi-Fi provider handy in the restaurant if you have questions or need technical help."

you may want to ask for that support number...

cheers

EDIT: Should have pointed you here first:

What worked for me

It turned out much easier:

1: dbl click wireless icon bottom right of today screen
2: Click "Turn On" (in WLAN Util/Main)
3: A pop up window says
" McD Hotspot connects me to internet|MyWork"
4: I selected Internet and clicked "Connect" from the pop-up
5: Opened browser, typed in http://yahoo.com and it started
(later I checked settings and
it showed "Open", "Disabled" )

There was no fee or intermediate router page to navigate through.

I tried Panera Bread also. There was a router page to navigate first and transfer was much slower.

Sometimes it tried to connect to the wrong net at both sites. Apparently they each had private and public wifi nets.

So it seems the key was not to mess with the defaults from the first popup. I think my problems stemmed from trying to set some encryption for the connections before.

It free in Singapore! Yahoo! When connected, it opens a Mc hotspot page and enter a name and email, your are logged in and off you go! You will see quite a few with their notebooks plug into any wall power sockets as well. Really hope they keep it this way.

Lol...$2000 laptops and $500 pdas all over McDonalds checking their email with a pile of $0.99 burgers in front of them. I still think there are some places that should be wifi-free zones. :)

There is at least one free one in Lubbock, TX near Texas Tech University and Lubbock High School. I think the other 25? Mickey D Locations charge.

Its actually more just drinks on their tables over here.... Mc's food is getting worst through the years.... their big breakfast meals used to be great but now usings chicken patties (used to be pork) and liquid eggs (yucks!)... sorry side track already... Mc's I still love your nuggets and chicken wings though.. and the free WiFi of course... :)
