WARNING ABOUT VGA AND DELL 51v with WM5

Well, I read this thread through very carefully, and followed everything to the letter, got a lovely VGA screen, but after that the unit hung permanently on the reset screen.

After doing a HARD RESET and spending 2 hours getting everything re-installed, I guess I will forego the pleasures of VGA until there is a better work around. I have AO6 installed, by the way - unless of course there is a PERECT solution out there somewhere which selectively changes the screen to VGA for IE in particular ....

Cheers

I'm afraid that it looks like a HARD RESET and complete re-install is the only recovery method....

Sorry,
John

Thanks, John. Before going through this again, do you know this will work because of your own experience with the same problem? I'm trying to figure out how a hard reset will help in this case. Thanks again.

Hello Mikesto,

Just to be sure....

In MY case, the AXIM 51v refused to start past the DELL boot screen, no matter how long I waited, so I felt a HARD RESET (Power On with the reset button pushed) was the only solution. Painful though!

From the post http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showp...&postcount=109 I have looked at http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconVa...upertino/2039/ for "Force HiRes" and copied the two files ForceHres.cpl and the ARM version of gsGetFile.dll into the Windows folder (take care, as all the instructions are in Japanese).

The software seems to work, but not with IExplorer, which is mainly what I wanted VGA for, but I haven't had the opportunity to play with it much. At least Force HiRes is easy to get rid of by just deleting the two files.

Good Luck!
John

Be sure to run sdkcerts.cab first or you wont be able to see the icons, and then run MvrTrueVGAx51v.cab.

To get back to QVGA mode just go to Start > Settings > System > Remove Programs and remove MvR TrueVGAx51v.

After the soft reset you will be in QVGA mode again, BUT you get errors appearing from gwes.exe and device.exe. If you turn of error reporting you don't see them and they don't seem to have any effect. Maybe some else out there knows why this is happening and can suggest a solution.

The MvrTrueVGAx51v.cab works great but is anyone having significant battery drain after switching to true VGA. I did the fake server hack before using it and that worked great but since I got my X51v running full VGA its like its experiencing significant battery drain again

It tested fine in TrueVGA mode on my x51v.
Awesome .cab, ran smoothly on my X51v, no movie/game trouble whatsoever. Uninstall works as good, quick and simple. A very handy tool to have a glimpse at a true VGA ppc.
Thumbs up !

I was amazed by how it looks after applying this simple program!
Now I can truly read pdf/ebooks.

I did have one problem though: my dutch version gave a device.exe error when trying to type anything. Reason for this is that the keyboard does not work anymore.
Solution to this problem is as follows:
- install Mark's program to have true vga
- connect the pda to a pc, and open an explorer in active sync
- browse to the windows dir on the pda
- copy/paste the msim.96.dll (or something like this, pretty sure it was msim. It is installed by Mark's program), and rename this to: msimnl.96.dll
- softreset

That's it. Now the keyboard works again.
Note thas can be done for any language, just check on other dlls what your language extension is, like "du", "jp", ...

Too bad that the dutch version only has the keyboard, and does not have written text recognition. I would have bought the english version had I known in advance.

viewing now from VGA. Gonna need glsses but heh!
only problem is that it keeps deleting the file "DellNavVGA.dll" & "DellNavQVGA.dll" which stops the nav from loading.
any ideas?
cheers

I've had the same issue and posted for a solution to no avail...so I kept screwing with it on my own and this is what've come up with.

In the OzVGA Files tab, add a path to each file.
When you switch from VGA to QVGA, it'll copy thos files over and make them available instead of just deleting them. Not sure if this optimal...but it works.
