how is the sound quality of the device compared to the loox 720 and hx4700?
Out of the box the X50 line sounds worse (as dell did not include any sort of equalizer) but if you download the free "x50Mix" program you can tweak the sounds exactly like the loox and HP. It can be gleamed that the x50 line has a the same DAC chip as the Ipod's do, so sound levels could be considered rougly comparable to that.
To the best of my knowledge, a x50 with x50mix would sound the same as the loox and HP. The quality of your headphones will play a much bigger role in the sound you hear.

i have a creative zen micro, which is supposed to sound better than ipods according to most audiophiles. my x50v sounds better than my zen does. after listening to my x50v my zen feels flat, with close to zero bass.
i don't like the zen micro because of its weak bass..
i was VERY impressed w/ the axim x50v using x50mix.. NICE bass and solid sound. it's actually close to my iriver mp3 player (well, not close but far better than an ipod)
of course, this is using good headphones (senn px100)
It's not the same chip, it just from the same series of chips.
Also, yes, there is hissing on my Loox, but as far as I can tell, pretty much 100% of pocket PC have this hiss?
It's not the hardware. It's the software. There's only one high-quality player out there, and it's mine. Everything else will sound like a tincan next to it, unless you have tin ears. The Truth.
