When comparing the hx4700 and the x50v the other thing to consider is the touchpad on the iPaq. I really don't like it. I find a traditoinal d-pad much better.

I would advise against going for the X50V with the vga screen, vga screen first of all carries a tremendous dropoff in performance and battery life and isn't worth it in the long run. Secondly, maybe I'm biased but somehow I like the X30H far more than my X50V. Currently I have both, I use the X30H way more than I use the X50V because it is faster in responding to inputs, has few compatibility issues, and its backlight and color saturation is just much better and easier on the eyes than the 50V.

Granted the X50V has a ton of functionality and has a nice VGA screen, but it is nearly impossible for me to use it in landscape mode because it just doesnt look right. Web surfing on the X50V is sluggish at best and I'd rather use my laptop or X30H. The VGA out function is just a marketing trick, and forces you to shell out 150 bucks for a bluetooth keyboard and mouse in order to make it useful for anything else other than watching movies on an expensive monitor. The X50V is also mutch heavier and clumsier than the X30H, and the X50V doesn't have the scroll dial that I really treasure for reading Ebooks.

Overall you really have to ask yourself what do you want a PDA for. If you want to get an expensive PDA with a VGA screen just because you can, then go for the X50V. For any real world usefulness and portability, the X30H is best out there in terms of price, performance, portability, and usefulness.

Personally I'd go for the x50v. The one thing I hate about some of the current iPaqs is HP's decision to use a touch pad instead of a d-pad.

I mean, who can't look at that stupid touchpad without saying, "OMGWTFBBQ!?"

you're the only one that i have ever heard voice those complaints. my vga screen looks awesome, i can't look at my old pda's (e335) qvga screen. it responds instantly for me and works great. i do agree about the scroll dial however, i also miss the one on my e335.

I think it's apples and oranges here. You're comparing the X50V to an e335, while I'm comparing it to an X30H. After the novelty of the VGA screen wore off, the X30H was still my best PDA.

You think the screen is useless, but it was an important feature for me. If you note my signature, you'll see that I switched from a Sony Clie SJ-33 - a device that had a 320x320 screen and hard graffiti area in a space around the same size as most PPC QVGA screens of the day. I could not look at a QVGA screen (and still can't) without being put off by the relative graininess, and the lesser amount of information displayed (I'm one of those minifont guys ...) - in simpler terms, how crappy it looked. I was thus limited to a VGA device, and the Axim provided the best value ...

I don't need presentations, I don't need super-fast surfing (although with any luck WM5'll fix a lot of the GFX issues), all I need is a screen that doesn't look like a backlit dot-matrix-printed page ... and it performs plenty well anyway.

Now, if the Axim would run PalmOS4 AND WM2003 ...
