Cut price x50v versus full price x51v

Hello one and all, greetings from London town!

New to the site and new to the world of PDAs, so be gentle ;-)

I've been spending plenty of time lurking around here, and I must thank all you guys for helping me in my quest for PDA knowledge.

Anyway, to business. What I'm after is a bit of advice from people in the know. I'm in the UK, and have more or less decided that a Dell Axim is the way forward.

However, at the moment on Dell UK there is 20 per cent off the x50v - making it £253 ($448). On the other hand, a new x51v costs £326 ($578).

Now for the obvious question; what do you think is the best option? Is the x51v worth splashing the extra cash or not?
The other option if I stay with Dell, is to go for a lower end X51, though even the lowest-end x51 (£232 or $411) is only a few quid cheaper than the x50v, and middle one (£279 or $494) is a touch more expensive.

I'm sure you'll have noticed it is bloody expensive over here. Am very jealous of US prices!

I realise you guys get dozens of "what do I buy" requests, so I appreciate your advice all the more for it. So, what's it to be?!

Thanking you kindly,

Smurf

P.S - I'm sure this place will become a home from home once I've acquired my new toy! Looking forward to it.

I would get the X50V if price is an issue. The main differences would be the Built-in Storage space. The OS will be the same as WM5 is offered with the X50v now.

Yeah, I would say if there is not that much of a price difference then just get the x51v. But, if you can find a good deal on the x50v and save $100 I would do that. They are pretty much the same unit with only a few differences. One is the x51v comes with Windows Mobie 5 already installed (with the x50v you will get a CD to install it yourself). And the x51v has more Built In Storage (BIS). Not really all that important as you can use memory cards in the x50v to make up for it.

In the end it is all about the money. Form your post it looks like the x50v is over $100 less then the x51v. If that is the case I would get the x50v, and spend the $100+ on a nice big memory card. :)

It's a tough one picking a new pda. And I thought choosing between the x30h and the X50 was tough... bottom line is you will probably be happy whichever way you go. (you might be slightly happier one way or the other but you will still be happy).

Oh and once you've made your choice... don't look at the price of any axim for the next 6 months......

On the Uk dell site the x50v is still offered with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. there is no mention of upgrade to WM5, you can't even pay for a upgrade yet.

Dell USA and Dell Canada are the only places where you can pre-order wm5 at the moment...

Well, this may be a biased view-point because I've just ordered the X51v, but my normal modus operandi is to get the best PDA I can afford, because I hate looking at extra features built-in to the next model up and thinking 'DAMN! I should have ordered the other one!!!’ that’s maybe just me though. The only difference I can see is 256mb flash and WM5 out the box. Oh and I think I read somewhere that the X51v uses a faster version of memory, but I could be wrong on the last point.

Can somebody help me.
I don't know what to choose X51V or X51.
I'm not a gamer, not interested in playing video.
Just outlook, word and excell.

By the way; is the battery life better on the X51 compared to the X51V?

Choice between the X51v and X51? Hmmm, you would regret it if you didn't go for the VGA screen, X51v I think. :approve:

I think you would probably be more happy with the x51v in the long run.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I think I may well plump for the X51v - I'm a flash git at heart and I like having the best gizmos. And besides, what's a credit card for anyway!

No doubt be seeing plenty of you here as I try and work out how to work the bloody thing!
