contact button + left + down = turn off backlight (temporarily)?

I was playing a game on my x50v and when I pressed the contact button and pressed down and left on the directional pad, the backlight turned off. It comes back on with the next press of any key. Is this normal? Is there a way to turn this 'feature' off?
