Connecting to the internet

I'm trying to connect to the internet using a free wi-fi site, but I can't figure out how to do it.
I'm a complete novice when it comes to all the abbreviated lingo, such as ssid, wep, etc. and I also don't know if I should be using network cards, odyssey client, WLAN Utility, or what. It all seems overly complicated for something so simple. Will someone please help or point me in the right direction? And does work or corporate network just refer to all the options to connect to the internet that are not dial-up modem? Can I connect to the internet without having to provide a dial up number? I'm totally confused.

Thanks.

Yes, I saw that site, but it seems to be more about hooking up to your home network in connection to your pc. I want to be able to walk into a cafe that has a free wi-fi hotspot and browse the internet. Maybe it does say how to do that, am I missing something in the article?
Thanks.

Walk in, turn on PPC, turn on WiFi, when it locates a network, a popup will appear on the screen. Select Work, then connect.

If your Internet browser does not work, try going into the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Set up my Proxy server. On the Proxy server tab, check the top box (This network connects to the Internet) but leave everything else on this page blank. On the General tab, the name should be "My Work Network." OK and then select the Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists.
