What an excellent analogy!

After having my 51v for a few days I'm very happy with the unit. Sure there have been a few issues that frustrated me but I think that's true anytime a new opperating system is released. The problems will be fixed by either MS or the crafty programmers in the pocket pc community.

So it takes an extra second to start a program. I'll take that as a trade off that I don't need to make backups every night. I had my unit fully drain it's battery and it's so nice to be able to just stick it in the cradle and not have to restore a backup.

Applications run great on this, TCPMP runs just as well on this as it does the 50v, games run even better. I always had trouble tweaking morphgear to work properly, with the 51v it works great.

As for the large soft buttons, it is ugly at first but you get used to it, and they are very functional for one handed use when you don't want to whip out your stylus. Thumbs up there

I hope the Jan '06 patch will solve some of these issues. But it seems that some of the fundemental ones will have to wait until MS releases the "XP" version of Windows Mobile. Again, thanks for your honest review.

So when will Micro$oft release Windows Mobile 5.0 Professional

that's why I don't think that the ME analogy is good because there is not going to be another mobile os for at least more than a year or two.

with every new windows mobile release I have seen almost the same thing that we are seing now. Many programs will have to be updated to make them compatible.

WM5 is more like XP without SP2 ;)
And I believe that that's the new update policy of MS. They are going to release a SP in the same way they did with XP.

SO is this thread saying that the x51v won't Bluetooth surf the internet through your desktop PC connection like the Menneisyys guids show you? Or is the debate over active sync? I don't have an X51v yet but this would be a bummer to not be able to surf the net in my house with Bluetooth through my desktop PC connection. Thanks for the clarification.

That's not correct again. Even if you had that profile you wont be able to go to internet using the Pass Throught feature of ActiveSync, because ActiveSync 4 does not have that feature any more. It was disabled by Microsoft due to security issues. So again... we will have to live with that in ALL WM5 DEVICES until MS release a fix for these security issues.

Are you able to use DUN to tether x51v to a bluetooth phone to dial the internet?
This would be a deal breaker for me

One thing I'm not clear on...

Once an x50v is upgraded with WM5, will it have BIS/persistent storage and everything except the 256 mb? (i.e. Will it be an x51v, minus the 256 mb, or will there still be some differences?)

I'm about to buy either one, and wondering whether I should buy the x50 and OS upgrade, or just bite the bullet and get the 51v. In the end, I'll probably end up with WM5 regardless, so I'm not sure which to pick...

Basically: Can the 50v take FULL advantage of the WM5 OS?

Thanks,
-M.

This is why I took the time to reply. NO, IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT X51V DOES NOT HAVE AND OTHER HAVE OR WILL HAVE. IT'S THAT ACTIVESYNC 4 DOES NOT HAVE INTERNET PASS THROUGHT. SO YOU WONT BE ABLE TO CONNECT YOUR DEVICE VIA BT TO ACTIVESYNC AND THEN GO TO INTERNET. I don't know Menneisyys guide so I can't give you more details in my answer.

The X50v with WM5 = X51v - 128 MB of ROM.

looks like i am going to stick with my x50v for a while. compared to other online "expert" reviews (including Chris'), this review is much more honest. Sorry Chris no offense but you are so closely affiliated to Dell, at least it smells like so...

'course i did. but i don't like the answers in that thread such as "that's life" and "so you better get used to it". can you image that you bought a crappy software that's full of bugs and the customer service told you that "that's life" and "you better get used to it"? i won't swallow that. :realmad: and what kind of genius programmer makes the decision for us that wireless sync is not secure and therefore took it off in WM5? why not leave it as an option for us? and what kind of genius makes the decision to put WM5 in BIS to extend battery life but slow down perfermance? this reminds me of an ancient chinese joke: a man feeds his monkey 4 bananas in the morning and 3 in the evening, and the monkey complains that 3 in the evening is not enough. so the man gave the monkey 3 in the morning and 4 in the evening and the monkey is very happy since there are 4 banana in the evening now. what does M$ think we are? The Monkey??? :exc:
