I agree with what you are saying 100% but... These issues are not X51v these issues are WM5 issues and are going to be present in any of the new coming with WM5 and in all current devices that are going to be upgraded. That's my point. From reading the review, users could think: ok, I'll stick with my X50v and upgrade it to WM5 and I wont have the problems described in the review. ;)
Until now, all the reviews that I have read point to problems in the OS. To say that the X51v is a bad machine is the same than to say that the X50x is bad as well.
Read my post again and count how many of the points are relative to WM5. ;)

When I said phrases like "get used to it" or you "will have to live with it" I'm just trying to make the point that some of the problem present at this moment in the OS are the price that we have to pay for having persistent memory. I myself prefer to have persistent memory than more speed and live with the fair of losing all my data due to an unexpected hard reset.

it seems t obe ROM increase is nice but I would prefer not to lose performance seen with ROM
But with that said ..it seems the bigger ROM and OS in ROM means "safer data and better battery life"...hmmm maybe a good trade off???

If you use your machine to play games and play movies and music an unexpected hard reset does not mean anything to you. If your machine is used to keep important data for my personal business, and me an unexpected hard reset means hours of work trying to restore at least the last 24 hours of entered info. So... for me, to have persistent memory worth a little bit of speed. :approve:
That's the part I like of this new WM5. I see the dark spots but the benefits are greater than those dark spots.

I have SpriteBackup to deal with unexpected hard resets. I never had a totally unexpected hard reset leading to data loss. I did have unintentional hard resets while messing around with a device or software while it was new to me, but then all my data was backed up. When on the go, I do not mess with the device. And a hard reset due to running out of battery power is simply a user error.
I did order my WM5 upgrade CD from Dell because persistant storage promise more RAM available to run programs, and in hopes that the new OS would support VGA better. In another forum I read that the rendering performance of the x51v is actually better than the one of the x50v, i.e. in line with the x50 non-v.
ctitanic, can you confirm this?

I have never had an inadvertent hard reset...it will happen now..never should have said that....
but battery failure is an issue has I have forgot the stupid adapter needed to use my ac charger twice on trips....so the ROM feature would good for me..so if WM5...works well..I amy consider the upgrade for safety and give a little on speed
Is the video chip really newer and faster???

I think it's a problem of both.
But I'm more inclined to say against the harware
RAM vs ROM
CPU
Battery power etc etc.
OEMs are trying to cut back their cost.

As for your last question: I don't think so. But the reviews that I have been reading mentioned faster VGA rendering speed due to better VGA support in WM5 - as opposed to better hardware.
Regarding hard reset insurance without WM5: get a replacement battery. They are only 20 bucks (search for "1100mAh for Dell Axim X50(v) and X51(v)") right now.

I'm a spritebackup user since 3 years ago but that that's stop you from losing at least 12 hours of info in my case. ;)

I can't answer your question because I never owned a x50. But if you want me to do some tests and compare them to a X50, I'll do it. Just explain me what to do.

I appreciate all of the comments and insight. When I first posted my review, I stated I was not an expert or even familiar with PocketPC's. I posted my initial impressions and what I saw as being the differences between a brand new X50 and a brand new X51. With that said, I know that most of the things I posted are WM5 issues, NOT X51 issues. Still, you can't get the X51 without WM5, so they're worth noting.
I've decided to keep my X51. Persistant storage is the biggest thing for me - it's already saved my bacon once. Plus, my X50 has some discoloring in the screen, so it would be going back anyways. I've also given up on Bluetooth altogether. The speed differences between the two are not huge, but noticeable - and also barable. I believe that many of the issues above will be fixed with updates or by developers.
I hope my comments have been useful to someone.

You have came to the same conclusion that I got the day I decided to by a X51v. There are problems in the latest OS but the gain of using persistent memory is more important to me than those problems ;)

They were. Hope you didn't feel like anyone was biting your head off. This is a fairly friendly forum.

Just how did that happen? Perhaps during software development?

I am interested in a speed comparison between the x50v and the x51v. I don't know why I assumed you had an x50v.
Is there someone else here who can shed some light?
