can't browse wireless network pc's using my X50v
Hello all,
After searching the forum for about a day now and going through the WiFi guide I am running into the following problem:
- i cannot see my networked PC's from my X50v
I have tried:
- using resco file explorer - reports no network found
- regular file explorer
- updating to A05
- updated my Netgear g wireless router firmware to the latest version
Things i can do:
- surf the internet using my wireless router
- access the X50v from my Desktop over a wireless connection
Does anybody have an idea where I should be looking? One thing I have noticed is that I am missing the Network card option under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I will provide any information required.
Thanks in advance
Daniel

I figured I would get this reply 1st, but as I stated in my original (perhaps not clearly enough) post I have seen this guide and tried everything in it.
Any fresh ideas on what could be casuing this?

I don't believe that the Axim will "see" networks as we do on a PC, you need to map the drive to be able to access it.
In Resco Explorer, tap-hold on the My Network, this will bring up a menu, select Map Drive and enter the path as \\ComputerName\SharedResource
You will be prompted for user and password.

I wish I could get this far then I wouldnt be here :D. Resco reports no networks found when I attempted this earlier. Yet I can access my PDA from my Desktop PC via the wireless connection.

I go to File Explorer -> Menu -> Open Path and then enter my server and resource. I get the error message cannot connect but browsing the internet works fine. My two cents.

There's also the difference between having your wifi connection set up to be "internet" and "work" - if it's set up to do one, it won't do the other. I have mine set to internet and I use this proggie to browse/stream from my network shares: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14818

Well how bout that it works. Thanks!
Now for the $64k question, why in the world do they do it that way? Why not have the network setup just like a PC?

Hi
sounds like a firewall issue.
Make sure UDP137 and TCP139 are open.
Also make sure that your sharing service on your desktop pc is enabled.
Can you see your shared folders on your dektop pc while using the
//computer_name/share_folder_name
convention ?

They didn't. Most people can do both if the PPC is set up as such: go into the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Set up my Proxy server. On the Proxy server tab, check the top box (This network connects to the Internet) but leave everything else on this page blank. On the General tab, the name should be "My Work Network." OK and then select the Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists.
BTW, in your first post,

This is not an option in WM03SE and later. You can still get to the Network Cards but it is on the Settings/Connections (tab) page but it really has nothing to do with your problem.

That worked great! It seems like a round about way to get things done. :rolling:

Sharing is enabled on the PC I am attempting to connect with, but I will check the status of those ports when I get home.
Also I cannot connect to the share folder using my X50V in my current state. Thanks for all this info and I will update the thread after checking those ports!

Here's a quote from the wifi networking FAQ :
"open your connection settings (Start, Settings, Connection (tab), Connections, Advanced (tab), Select Networks (figure Net-9) and select "My Work Network" from both dropdown lists"
This is the problem most of the time.
all you need to do is type the name of your computer in either file explorer or internet explorer, they'll both work, like so :
say my computer is named bob,
on my PPC I would go to the file explorer, click on the 3rd option down at the bottom, it would pop up a box and i would type in //bob/
That would have the PPC show all shared folders and resources on bob.
from there it is easy to go to what ever share you want. dont forget to do full permissions, I've found that occasionally setting read only permissions, while it may work good with other computers, may mess up the PPC browsing.
