I just got my replacement axim x51 yesterday, and it has an A05 ROM version number-they know there is a problem, they just aren't very open about admitting there is a problem. Oh, yeah, and I had to soft reset it this morning to turn it on. HA HA HA HA!!! I did see one thing, though. I have now set the power button to do a full power off when I press and HOLD the power button (since it does it on it's own anyway) and I will let you know in a few days if there is any improvement.

So... you have A05, which has not yet been released, as an upgrade, correct? Any chance of a screenshot? And can you please share with us if any of the major improvements, which people have been asking for, like additional BT profiles, are in A05? Or anything else that you can see that has been changed, outside of bug fixes? Thank you!

rcoffman, as I said my AS is on manual and it syncs constantly (5min intervals or so) when cradled. It never syncs automatically unless on the cradle or if I pick send/receive in e-mail or sync action in AS. So before it would sync even if you just had BT internet or WiFi internet, but with AS on manual is syncs automatically only when cradled to PC. At least this is how mine acts.
And as I said I didn't do this to solve any problem, but I have never had the turn on problem and I don't have the CF dissapear problem either even though I use the PDA every day with CF 6GB drive in there 24/7. So it is possible that I'm not having the problems because of manual AS.

Unfortunately, I don't think the A05 rom update did any good, since I still had to soft reset twice today (not a bad day, I guess) to turn it on. I spent THREE HOURS online and on the phone with dell, and believe it or not, I may be able to get an X50 from them with WM 2003 to replace this paperweight I now hold. Yes, I would take a step back as long as I can turn the damn thing on.

I didn't notice anything new...especially bug fixes. I am not willing to tolerate another day of crap from this device. I will not put my SD card in and out. I will not hard reset while the tech chats with me asking "are you with me". All I want is to turn the thing on. My wife has an X50. She can sync hers, put it in her purse and not touch it for 3-5 days, take it out and turn it on. Why can't mine do that. Sorry for the rant, it just sucks to drop that much change on a glorified address book that won't turn on.

I've joined this club!
Received my new X51V a few weeks ago. Upgraded the ROM to A04 straight away. Very impressed by the screen and the speed. Received a free 1Gb CF card from Dell so very happy. The next day the troubles started. Wouldn't power on - very strange. Turns out the battery was flat! Hmmm - must have been me. I've had this a couple of times now (including disappearing CF card). The major problem appears to be the battery just completely draining when in suspend. I've read through all these forums and many others and there appears to be a number of "fixes", depending on your device. I haven't sussed it out yet, but I will see how it goes with setting all the AS to manual first. Leaving BT on or popping out the CF card aren't good options IMHO. The other one is to try and power it right down (hold down power button option) and see what happens, but really not a good option either. I've seen theories about it drainign quicker below about 80% charge. Last night mine drained from 100% to zero overnight in suspend mode (lock key on as well). I've had the device on all day with WiFi syncing every 5 mins and it ran fine for about 5 hours before getting below 10% so I don't think this is the case. I'll let you know how Igo.

Thanks for the info.
This stuff is too much to tolerate. I agree. I'm sorry they didn't test it out more thoroughly before beginning to ship units, and make more effort to maintain compatibility. And that no one can explain why you have those issues with yours and I don't with mine.
But it looks like this update didn't give you what you want and also won't give me what I want....

Sounds like we're screwed for another 3 or 4 months until they release ROM A06. Hopefully we will still be able to use the " ACTIVESYNC to MANUAL" trick with A05 until March or April when A06 might be released.

- Open Activesync on your WM5 device
- Click Menu
- Click Add Server Source
- Enter any server address (eg Chillywinter.com) and click Next
- Enter any Username (eg Chillywinter)
- Enter any password (eg Chillywinter)
- Enter any Domain (eg Chillywinter)
- Click Next
- Click Finish
Now Menu / Schedule won't be ghosted out, so select it:
- Click Menu
- Click Schedule
- Change Peak times = Manual
- Change Off-peak times = Manual
- Click OK
You have now successfully changed your activesync option to manual. This seems to have the effect of ensuring the PDA doesn't try to sync when in standby mode.
Now delete the fake server you created:
- Click Menu
- Click Options
- Highlight "Exchange Server"
- Click Delete
Activesync will no longer try to sync when in battery / standby mode.
 You have fixed your X51.

Does this "fix" also help with the "not recognizing the CF card" problem? Or just the not turning on issue? Turning on Bluetooth has fixed both issues for me. But I'd rather do this if it will work.

Hey Guys,
I bought a 1GB sandisk sd card about 7 days ago. No problems whats so ever! turns on properly, and the card doesn't disapear. Two days ago I just purchased a PNY 1 GB sd card and now my x51v doesnt turn on after 5 hours of stanby or so, and as well my battery drains like crazy. So could it be the different memory cards that are in the axim at cause it not to turn on?
I tried the manual activesync, and I'll keep you guys updated on how that is going.

It seems that if you use both a CF and a SD card that the problem exists. But if you use one or the other it doesn't.

For what it's worth. Got my x51v as a Christmas present. I started having the turn on problem, a couple of days ago, after I started accumulating files on both my SD and CF cards. I was also noticing the white screen of death. To top it all off, battery bled down to nothing overnight too. I did the AS MANUAL HACK, yesterday. It's day 2. No white screen, no leaking battery, no lost cards and the thing turns on EVERY TIME, and I'm still running the A01 rom. When I connect to my desktop it syncs just fine in the cradle, I'm not really any worse for wear. It worked for me.

Nope - I only have a SANDisk 1Gb CF and I have the problems. (The CF came with the Axim).

I too am at Day 2 of AS set to manual and so far so good. I'm running A04 ROM. If it keeps working for anotherfew days, then I'll switch back and see what happens.

This is what they told me to try. New for Cristmas and unable to turn on so this is what they told me to do.

Unfortunately that won't fix your "not turning on" problem - all that link is, is the A04 ROM update. (Note: when you first apply A04 you will think you've fixed the problem, but 48 hours later, it will be back again).
A05 seems to be available to Dell to play with at the moment, but they haven't made it available as an update to AXIM x51 users yet. Even so, ROM A05, sounds like it hasn't fixed the "not turning on" problem. It may have fixed some other problems, but we won't know until we get it in January.
In the meantime, all those with the "not turning on" problem will need to set the activesync to manual as described above.
Fingers crossed that ROM A06 will fix this problem (later in 2006). Wouldn't it be nice if those lovely people at Microsoft would read these forums occasionally, and at least write a script that sets the active sync to MANUAL when you click on an icon. I mean, how hard would that be???

Thanks Mantaray for the fix. I have a Axim 51v loaded with over 100 megs of stuff...demos, programs, emulators and whatever else I can load into it to see if I can break things -- noticed power on issue requiring soft reset whenever my 1 meg Sandisk SD card was in the unit. I cleared the check boxes as you recommended and the power-on issue is no more. Thank you.

"all those with the "not turning on" problem will need to set the activesync to manual as described above."
Actually two issues:
Power drain: use ActiveSync from 'automatic to manual sync fix'
Soft Reset needed for Power On whenever Memory Card is in the unit: cleared the check boxes on 'Turn on device from suspend mode' (Posted by Mantaray)
