cant get x51 to sync with my notebook

whenever i connect the usb cable, it comes up as a "local area connection" in the "network connections" in the control panel.
i dont know what the problem is...it works fine on my dad's computer. PLEASE HELP!!!

While speaking with Dell yesterday regarding my sync issue

I noticed that the Axim and Active Sync 4.0 had created a second network connection. I asked the tech about this and he said that is how Active Sync 4.0 communicates. While the device is connected if you run ipconfig it will show you the connection and the IP address assigned to it.
