Make sure all firewalls are turned off. If you running ZoneAlarm or Norton this can be hard to do at times. If you can get all Firewalls off, try to resync.
The reason I say this, I have done 3 X50 to WM5 conversions. Mine was a piece of cake. The other two were a bugger to do. It was all because of multiple firewalls. The first one had windows firwall & Norton turned on. All ports were blocked to Network calls. Active sync would not work. I turned Windows Firewall off and for the life of me I could not get Norton to let go so I had to uninstall it. As soon as I did that and rebooted, all was ok.
The second one had Windows, Norton and ZoneAlarm. Same problems I ended up doing the same. and got it to work.
You know the worst part of it is, None of the folks needed to have a software Firewall anyway. They all were behind a hardware firewall. A big waste of bucks.
Anyway, All PPC are running fine on WM5, but what fun it was to get there....

Here is something else to try;
if the ppc has WM5 on it, try pinging it. if you can ping it Activesync should work. If not the ports are blocked some how.
This how you do it.
On your pc, click on START and then RUN. The run dialog should appear. type in CMD and click on ok. A black DOS box should appear. On the command line type in this command
ping WM_ray_cooper
Substitute WM_Ray_cooper with your ppc's name
It should reply back like this picture
Hope this helps

You have to have 4.0 or 4.1 to downgrade. 3.8 and down wont connect to a ppc with WM5 on it...

Sync problem solved. Fiddled with the Device Manager on the PC and noted that the USB driver for X50v was absent. Either it was not re-installed by the Dell installation disk or not initially recognized by the PC. The drivers on the Del CDROM did not work, but somehow a suitable driver was found in the WINNT folder... Activesync fired up and installed a sync folder on my desktop as soon as the driver was recognized.
Now on to reinstalling my apps...

Thank you for the responses... sometimes all it takes to keep from giving up is a friendly stranger telling you there's still stuff you have't tried, that a solution is still possible...
Now why would the firewall have ANYTHING to do with this?
There is no way I'm going to keep turning off the firewall just to sync....this is a moronic setup....thre has to be an easier way...I'm downloading 4.1 to see if it fixes it. What a pain in the @$$. :realmad:

Well something other than WM5 would be what I had on there....why would someone change such a fundemental synching protocol?
I have a lovely brick now...it won't sync and I can't restore it...it will only charge.
Nice one Dell.
After finally getting it to run halfway right I go and upgrade thinking I would get lucky.
Just screwed.

Hi,
as said before, just switch of you personal firewall not permanent, only for testing. If than sync is working you can be sure that's an firewall issue. This issue is well known and you should blaim Microsoft for that not Dell. Just have a look at this page describing the firewall issue and the solution: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...c/default.mspx
Hello everyone, I had the same problems and worked with Dell tech support only to determined that I had to return it and they sent me a new one in about 2 days. So I removed Active Sync 4.0 and reloaded off the new cd and it connected on the 1st try. Also for those interested in connecting via bluetooth go here: http://axim.dpicts.com/ this also worked on the 1st try.
So I am down to just 2 issues which are loss of cf card from time to time and no able to turn on from time to time without soft reset. I think Microsoft needs to re-think Active Sync 4.0. You should not have to disable your firewall to sync. They set it so you cannot sync via wireless due to security but to use it you need to disable your firewall. It just does not make sense!
Good luck to everyone.
Is there a wireless sync solution w/ the 4.x series since it was removed? Wireless sync was my best friend since on campus we have complete wifi coverage and I can just enable wifi, sync, disconnect and read/respond on the go. I'll cry if its gone..
I am still suffering the hanging sync problem. Installed Activesync 4.1, the device shows up in the hardware devices. I can ping it. I can explore the device, but not into the windows folder.
Windows2000, SP4.
Syncing on my Laptop via IR works though but speed sucks.
I am desperate, because my X5 was stolen and I really need the device.
I have 4.1 installed with the free Zonealarm (only fire wall). I have all of the AS41 applications wide open in the firewall and no joy. Once I turn off Zonealarm (exit) ActiveSync works perfect every time with no hitches. Not sure why at this point. After syncing I turn Zonealarm back on.
After reading endless stuff about this and being little the wiser, I followed a hunch from setting up my home network. I am using Activestink 4.0 with Zone Alarm (basic not pro). I went to Network Setting and found I was connected to Axim via something like Local Area Connection 4. I clicked on it and got an IP address and subnetmask. I added these to the trusted zone (Firewall>>Zones), I did it for both the IP and the IP + subnet, restarted everything and it worked. I had been trying for a day and a half and think this is not exactely an easy way of setting up comms between a PC and a mobile.

I cannot find another Local Area Connection in my case than those I always had (2 networkcards and 1 software driver.
I find a windows mobile network device in system manager / hardware though, and I can ping the windows mobile device.

I tried this, found the local area connection (mine was 6) and put the ip address and subnetmack address in the trusted zone area. It still does not sync unless I turn ZoneAlarm off completely and then its 100% all of the time. Is a mystery!
