By the way, in addition to the above (excerpt from Microsoft website):

SUMMARY
ActiveSync 4.x requires the following Winsock Transmission Control Protocols (TCP) to be available:
• 990 (RAPI)
• 999 (Status)
• 5721 (DTPT)
• 5678 (Legacy Replication)
• 5679 (Handshake & Legacy Replication)
• 26675 (Airsync)
If socket port filtering occurs on any of these Winsock ports, ActiveSync does not synchronize with Microsoft Windows mobile devices.

See the website for details.

I also think I should invoice Dell hourly for the above. I do not think their help desk personnel understand these issues well.

(my) problem solved

Setup
-------
Windows XP, Dell x51v, ActiveSync 4.1.0 (Build 4841). Only Windows Firewall installed. Axim connected to HP laptop in a docking station and via a USB hub

Problem
----------
Having spent several days attempting to sync my x51v and not even being able to get it to connect to ActiveSync via USB I stumbled across a post (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp...8&TopicId=5741) that pointed me to the DHCP client. Having confirmed that this was running (via Services) I looked at the properties for the 'Local Area Connections 6' that was associated with 'Windows Mobile-based device #4' via Start -> Settings -> Network Connections (as you can probably tell, have attempted a number of re-installs!)

Looking at the Properties revealed that TCP/IP was not even enabled for this network connection! I enabled it and sudddenly both laptop and PDA sprang into life. Have now synch'd and everything is good with the world again.

Having raised a call with Dell I have informed them of the fix (or at least sent them an e-mail via their auto-responding e-mail address). Hopefully they'll update their on-line trouble shooter as I can't belive I'm the only one with this specific problem. May also send Microsoft an e-mail as their troubleshooting guide doesn't mention this issue.

Hope this post helps someone else out there who has been suffering the same pain as me!

FIX - finally something that works

I just received this from Microsoft via Dell:

You will need to download a registry editor for the Axim. The only one that I found to work is Resco. You can download a trial version from the following:
http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp

All that you really need to install is the Registry Addin

Once installed on the Axim then go into the Resco Registry icon, then add the following entries:

Reg Sub Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers\RND IS]
Name of value to add: MTU
Type: DWORD
Data: 1514

Reg Sub Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers\RND IS]
Name of Value to add: MaxOutTransfer
Type: DWORD
Data: 1642

After adding these entries I did a soft reset of the device. Everything is working fine now.

After much frustration, enabling TCP/IP is all it took me. Thanks!

Can one of you guys who has this working and has a x51 post up a screen shot of your device manager?

I have an old X5 and when synced it shows up as a Windows CE Device under its one type in device manager and not under "network adapaters." and I am helping someone with a x51 and am not sure what it should look like.

Thx

First of all you have to install the latest version of Active Sync 4.# which I do not recommend for your X5 device. This new version of AS works different than the 3.# versions did. The Windows mobile device should show up as a netword device under the "network adapters". It looks like a network card. But again, only install AS V.4.# if you really need it - i.e. you have to connect a WM5 device.

Mine works fine. I thought I would see if it was worth getting BT to sync instead of USB and after two days of errors, I found out MS is smoking crack and syncing via BT is still years away. My damn Nokia cell phone syncs easier via BT.

Buddies x51 shows up as a network device but AS4.1 never sees it. I disable XP2 firewall and same thing. I've got a few more ideas to run down yet.

Got a new one. The PDA doesn't show up in LAN. This is a Win2K machine same PDA with AS4.1 I plug my X5 into it and it fires up AS4.1 just fine. Not his though. There is NO firewall software on the machine.

I even killed McAfee and his VPN software (which wasn't running) in the services just to elimiante it.

The PDA does show up in the device manager as is seen in this pict.
http://66.14.152.234/ftp/ray/As4/After.jpg

Any ideas? Are there any settings that need to be set on the PDA itself?

OK, I really need help with this problem...I see this thread has been dead for almost a month, so I hope that doesn't mean no one can help. I've tried every solution listed above short of downloading the registry editor (I don't think I could install it since AS doesn't work anyway). Here are the details of my system, let me know if I left out anything that might be helpful

Axim x51v (WM 5.0)
Win XP Professional SP2
McAfee Firewall (configured according to guidance above and disabled on several attempts)
ActiveSync 4.1

AS will do one of three things when I try to connect
1) icon spins, says connecting, never stops for eternity (until I get pissed and remove it)
2) connects, attempts to sync, says "Sync error" on the PC and "A problem has occurred with repllog.exe" on the Axim
3) Does not connect, does not spin, does not do anything

My device is listed as a network adapter in the device manager
TCP/IP settings are enabled on the computer
DHCP Service is enabled
I can ping the device
I do not see the AS ports when I do a "netstat" command

From that info I am left to believe that it must be some other program stealing my ports. I have no idea what it could be or how to stop it.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

I don't think so...I don't even know what it is. It's not listed in my "Add/Remove programs"

It's not really a solution but have you considered trying to sync via bluetooth?

Trying to sync via bluetooth or infrared can help to eliminate many of the issues.
Try the ActiveSync V4.2 beta http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...ivesync42.mspx
Try other trouble shooting steps here: http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/acti...shoot-as4x.htm
