Let's try another approach....check these Outlook settings:
Open Outlook on the pc
Open the inbox
click tools tab
click preferences
click email options
put a check mark in each box BUT the top one
on replies....do not include
on forwarding....include
NO CHECK IN BOTTOM BOX
---------------------------
click mail setup tab
click email accounts
check the view or change box
this brings up another page showing the email accounts that you have set up....it should not be blank
highlight your account and click change
look very closely...this is where most errors occur...look at every word, every period
all 6 boxes need to be filled in
leave secure authentification unchecked
now click on "test account settings"
did it pass? if so...problem solved
if not, cick the "errors" tab and tell me what it says
there are several other settings but lets stop here and see if it now works...if not, we'll look further
remember to let me know!

thank you very much for your effort to help. I have some problem to follow your advice because I use a german version of Office 2003 so the menu titles are different and in fact I could not find the items you told me in my outlook program.
But I found another thing which might be of importance.
In the Extras of my Email menu the top entry is Windows CE Posteingangstransfer. (Windows CE Email inbox transfer...)
When I try to open this item I get an error message:
the command is not available, check the program manual how this extension should be used.
This was after I tried a repair of Outlook.
Before the repair there was a message that pmailext.dll could not be found. (it is really nowhere in my files)
I use Plaxo. (contact manager) After repair the Plaxo Extension disappeared. Now after re-install the missing pmailext.dll message is here again.

I recently updated my firewall (the free ZoneAlarm one) and after installation and trying to sync it gave me the ip address that it blocked. I put that address into my 'trusted' zone in ZoneAlarm and I have been able to sync ever since. I would agree though, the code writers did not seem to do much testing prior to release or they would have listed the firewall as an issue to resolve and how to resolve it. Like wise why BT solves the reoccuring loss of CF and SD cards as well as stopping the 'Does Not Turn On' issue is another puzzle. With these work arounds however my X51V is working great and I am very happy for that fact. I just wish Dell/MS would have given us a clue as what was happening. It would have stopped alot of stress and frustration on users part to say nothing to their reputation. Just my 2 Cents worth.

actually there IS a page with help on firewall settings.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...c/default.mspx
and this one specially for your "zone alarm"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...sync/zone.mspx
:approve:
with that said ... it still doesn't mean I am in favour of MS for their monopolized way of doing business and their buggy softwares though ;)

thats correct, I tried this page but it did not help in my case. I think it is not a firewall problem here but the last 3 words in your quote.

I have seen that and agreed that there is a good help page for adjusting firewalls - it might help someone who has a firewall problem but there must be other causes of the impossibility to sync out there than firewall issues. Anyway, I returned my WM5 device and hope the X50V will be here soon. AS 3.8 is known to work in my OS. ... -.-

I bought my X51V at www.pdamax.de - they agreed to exchange it. By the way, in the moment the X50V is more expensive than the X51V - I wonder why.
Dell wanted to send me a new X51V ... but I am sure it was no hardware problem so I disagreed.

After weeks of struggling to get my x51v to ActiveSync with both my laptop and desktop, I finally succeeded. Turns out I had to wipe out all vestiges of prior AS installations, let drivers recreate themselves, and turn off all firewall and VPN applications. I describe the tedious steps here:

Hope it helps,

Called Dell, no help, Called microsoft they wanted $ 25.00 bucks.
Anyways,The firewall is off, the programs activesync are ok in the firewall not blocked. NO VPN. no this, no that.
Very Frustated :(
If I cannot get it to work I will return this Microbe soft crap and I will get a palm with hotsync.

I had the same problem with Activesync 4.0 that came w/my 51v. The folks at Dell in the Virgin Islands (it was Thanksgiving Day in the US and they were closed here)told me there were problems w/ ASync 4.0. I downloaded 4.1 and it still did not work. Finally I figured out I had to designate MS Outlook and I unchecked the sync function to email (thought I would make it simple at first, I'll add email later). Things finally sync-ed when i went into Outlook on my laptop and upgraded to MS Outlook 2002, I had 2000. All seems to work now, plan to add email to the process

Hey guys I just had this same problem on my comp I tried installing it on multiple computers and still "retriving settings" and nothing more! I have solved it for me. ^_^. Here is how I did it. Install any active sync software versions 4.0 or 4.1. once done unplug all network connections. Then turn off windows firewall (by the way after the active sync install reboot!) exit any and all firewall software and poof it works. I am using sygate personal firewall. With it I have found at least three programs that must be allowed to access the PDA. I am using the Axim x51v. two of them are activesync the other is wmi or something like that. I probably won't be visiting the site any time soon again so if you want to talk to me send an email to xerop362@yahoo.com SPAM IS NOT APPRECIATED.
sorry for my unorganized method of saying this. Any clarifications shoot me an email.!

Plaxo software installed?
Hello,
Have you installed some Plaxo software? We are having problems with an Axim and sync with Outlook 2002 (and Plaxo toolbar installed). ActiveSync 4.1 hangs. We did a test with another PC, Axim, ActiveSync 4.1 ans Outlook 2002 without. Works just fine. After installing the Plaxo toolbar, the we have the same problem.
Seems to me there is a conflict between Plaxo and ActiveSync.
Greetings,
Gert

Hello everbody.
I found this forum by accident, while sorting out my activsync problems, and with people mentioning that a firewall was the 'main' issue, i looked into it.
Like most here, i was using the 'latest' rubbish from microsoft, without 'any' success (ActivSync v4.2), and i'd tried all previous versions too (yawn).
The problem that i had with my XDA and JORNADA devices, was indeed firewall related, so here's some details:
It is NEVER enough with Windows (XP - all versions) to just 'disable' the firewall in Control Panel, cos it doesn't disable (HEY microsoft, do you actually employ programmers? or just leave monkeys in a dark room, with a keyboard?).
Even if you tick the 'disable' box, it still keeps on blocking - why? i dunno, ask Bill ;)
Also, Zone Alarm is just as bad :( - i RECOMMEND the old SYGATE PERSONAL FIREWALL (free version).
Anyway, here's how i have repaired mine, on all 4 PDA's i have used.......
1) Close/exit any 'extra' firewalls you may have installed (i only use the old FREE version of Sygate Personal Firewall - u NEVER need anything more than this, firewalls all do the same thing, so don't go buying a 'newer' version just cos you can!)
2) Go to Control Panel, open the garbage Windows Firewall settings.
3) Make sure OFF is ticked.
4) Click the ADVANCED tab at the top.
5) You will see a list of 'selectable' connections (these are all the network/internet connections Windows knows about, and your PDA is here too).
As an example, mine has;
HOMECALL BROADBAND - my 'standard' broadband connection
LOCAL AREA CONNECTION 2 - my LAN card causes this to be here automatically
LOCAL AREA CONNECTION 3 - THIS IS THE ONE, its to the PDA ! ha, got you!
WIRELESS NETWORK 3 - my internet connection to my wireless router.
(important - your PDA will not have that same name as mine!!, thats OK)
6) Make sure ALL boxes have a tick in (to avoid any confusion - it wont do any harm!)
7) Highlight the 1st item on that list, and click on SETTINGS to the right of that list.
8) It will briefly say PLEASE WAIT. Now, this list it shows you, is what 'can' be blocked/firewalled. You MUST MUST MUST tick ALL of the boxes, or it will just make it awkward to control your network. If you know all about these different settings, you can change them later, but for now, tick them ALL. Each time you tick a new one, a box will appear, just click OK to get it to vanish again.
9) Once all are ticked, click OK at the bottom.
10) Next, do the same 'ticking' process, for ALL of the connections you have on the list you can see. Once they are all done, you can OK out of the firewall settings utility.
11) Now, plug the PDA in (i use USB, bluetooth, IRDA and USB, and they all work fine now). Activsync will (should) find it, and sort itself out :)
12) Once you have checked it can work properly, turn your firwall back ON, and adjust its settings appropriately (depending on your system).
So, why does it do it? Well, instead of ActivSync finding your PDA as a REMOVABLE STORAGE DEVICE (which would be sensible!), it sees it as a NEW NETWORK - another computer terminal in fact, so it sets up a network, and then XP's faulty rubbish firewall jumps in and panics, and SILENTLY blocks the new network off (good thinkin Bill - thanks!).
I think that will get 'most', (but not all), working. White screen errors 'may' be caused by system files on the PDA getting overwritten while still in use (i dont know just yet on that one), and things like not syncing, but doing other tasks? dont know yet either - i will be looking into it.
Good Luck with it all - i will check back here occasionally to see if that has helped anybody.
