In my case, this solved the problem:

On your X51v, got to Settings->Connections
select USB to PC
uncheck the "enable advanced network functionality"

after a hard reset of axim x51, my laptop will no longer connect to device with activesync 4.5 and windowsxp pro. The problem develops after hard resets, and persists despite that:

The Axim connects to my office work station.

There is only one parnership (my office) in the Axim Activesync list.

The firewall is disabled.

A new profile is created in Outlook.

The firewall is enabled and Activesync allowed in exceptions.

The USB port is switched.

THere are no partnerships in the laptop registry (HKCU/Software/Microsoft/WindowsCE Services/Partnerships)

The options are all grayed out on the laptop activesync-there are no devices listed . The activesync on the Axim lists only the working activesync at the office.
It would be nice to have even a guest account to reinstall software. It is astounding the Microsoft is unable or unwilling to correct this all too frequent problem. I will post if I can find the offending setting. I suspect an undiscovered registry change in the laptop or the Axim is needed.

This did it for me too. Although I switched my USB connection so it wasn't running through a hub at the same time. Moving on to 4.5 now...

still hanging with "retrieving settings"

I have a new Dell Axim X51V now. I installed AS 4.5.
On my laptop everything works now. On the desktop (same W2K SP4, Outlook 2003) no luck.
The hourglass is turning and it says "retrieving settings".
My Axim has ROM version A04.
I let run the AS diagnosis program. No known errors found.
I can browse the PDA, I can install and move files. It shows as a network card in system hardware. I can Ping the device.
It asks me for the access key when I put the PDA into the cradle.
Active Sync shows the name of my PDA on top, but when I connect it changes the name into WM_Werner.
Why that?
When I want to switch off the advanced networking functions on the PDA it says RNDIS could not be activated for the serial connection. About the Plaxo issue:
I had Plaxo installed once, but I have removed it from Outlook. I could not uninstall it from the PC. There is no enty in the system / software.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Pedah, you saved my day.
It really worked. I had to delete my Bluetooth GPS connections, then uncheck the advanced networking functions, and now I can sync with my PC.
I cannot believe, how buggy this AS crap is...

thanks a lot for your help.
