I encountered the same problem of slow startup on my x51v when I left the odyssey client on the default setting. After I disabled it and exited the program for good (it no longer shows on my taskbar), the problem seems to have been reduced significantly.
Now (1 more week of use), my X51v has started bugging again me about the OdClientCE.exe which could not be started.
Since I disabled the Oddysey client, I have not used it at all. I removed the SmartStartup from the \Windows\Statup directory and I scanned the registry for settings related to the Odyssey client. None found.
Still, the device is exceedingly (intolerably) slow on startup and reminds me every now and again of problems relating to the ODClientCE.exe.
I there anybody out there who has successfully cured the slow-on-startup problems?
there´s a way to disable OC effectively. I have an x50v but i´ve read on aximsite some sort of fix to this. Sorry I couldn´t find the link but search around and you´ll find it!
Absolutly no boot time. Press the button and go. Within 5 secs the wifi network or my phone is found and proceeds to connect. Im running Windows Vista Theme with Wisbar Adavance 2 and Desktop. I also have pocketbreeze, informate, weather, and a dock being drawn at Auto Processor configuration. ALl of these are installed to BIS.
I too have had the Odyssey problems. Unlike many others I am A) a total newbie and B) I bought the machine so I could check mail and surf the internet in my home with wireless. So I didn't install anything other than one of the games that came with the x51v (the racing one) and the diver for a CF Ethernet card (So I can take it with me when I travel).
My experience is that the x51v is totally unstable when I start up in an area with no wireless. I have to wait for the Odyssey client to die a couple times before I can enter any data, and it takes a long time (a minute maybe?) to start up. When there is wireless (such as in my home) it is pretty flawless.
I think that there may be a conflict between the Dell WLAN and the Odyssey clients. For example when I'm connected with Odyssey, the Dell WLAN is disabled in theory (shows no bars) and I cannot "enable wireless." This tells me the two don't play nice together.
How do you "really" disable the Odyssey client? Is there any way to do it without installing a 3rd-party regedit tool (if there were a command line or an equivalent of regedit I'd have no qualms about dealing with the registry.)

Effectively, it makes the device unusable as a datebook, because after switching it on, you have to wait for about 30s before the device actually starts processing your input (going to the next day or entering a new appointment). 30s in those circumstances is very, very long.
I was unable to actually disable the Odyssey client (the Odyssey icon was still visible in the task bar, although I had it disabled) and the slowness stayed. Even after a soft reset.
I have been able to actually disable the OC by restoring a registry I saved earlier (the icon is gone from the task bar) and now the unresponsiveness seems to have gone.
My conclusion: there is something wrong with the OC that was preinstalled on the X51v. After some use of the OC for WiFi, for some strange reason it makes the device slow on startup. Just my €0.02.
Is there anybody else out there that is experiencing the same thing and perhaps has some light to shed on this issue?
BTW I'm new on this forum and new on the WM platform as well. I used to use a Palm (still do, as I'm not feeling entirely secure about the X51v as yet).

Good luck...
Thanks for the tip. I have searched around a bit and found about 30 threads or so with the words 'disable' and 'Odyssey' in, but I'm pretty sure I did all of the stuff that's described in there.
All I've seen so far is about choosing File->Disable and doing a soft reset. Did that, but still I get the messages about not being able to start either \Windows\ODClientCE.exe or \Program Files\Funk\...\ODClientCe.exe (curiously enough). Actually, I would like my device _NOT_ to try and start OC, because it makes starting up unbearably slow.
Still hoping that anybody knows a fix that will allow me to get rid of OC (without having to hard-reset)....
Finally, I have decided to do YAHR (Yet Another Hard Reset) and made _very_ sure not to use the Oddysey Client at all (I haven't even tapped the icon once).
At the moment, my Axim has been fine for over a week now. No more slowness on startup... No more warnings about not being able to load ODClientCE.exe. :celebrate
Stay away from the Oddysey Client is the only way to fix it apparently!
I believe you can get rid of the odyssey client by just creating a dummy file with the same name and replacing it in the windows folder and teh program files folder. This was one of the first things I did after updating my x50v to wm2005 and I have not had any of the problems you describe. Hope this helps.
Hey hey hey.. I had this problem and it drove me nuts. As I was told here :http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=112052 get MemMaid (free trial) and then goto notifications. Click on "Find Duplicate" and then delete them. My axim now responds almost immediatly. I then restarted it a few times and checked memmaid again. It found another coupel of OdclientCE notifications, this time I deleted every mention Odyssey and restarted/soft reset. Its been fine since..
I am not sure if they fixed OC in A06, but when I first got my Axim, I tried using OC. It was horrible, all the symptoms that everyone was describing was happening to me. I tried to disable it, it did not work, the only thing that I found that worked for me was to do a hard reset, and never touch OC again. That worked, and I have never had an ODClientCE.exe error or the typical slowdowns.

I found the same thing with using the day initial to forward. I found that using the date calendar thats hidden under the date (upper left hand area of the calendar application) works significantly faster.
I came on here about to post about my problem with the x51v... but your description of the symptoms are exactly the same as mine. Furthermore, if i have an appointment alarm/notification set to go off and the error of the "cannot execute \windows\odclientce.exe" pops up as well, I cannot close the error box or do anything at all and am forced to to a soft reset.
It is quite irritating, having to turn the thing on hoping to jot down something quickly, only to wait about a minute before i can use any functions (I came off the Tungsten T to the x51v hoping for something with more functionality, so i might be spoilt for speed at turn on).
Unfortunately I'm stuck in the same boat as you, I don't know how to remedy the situation (I would happily disable odclient for functionality, even if it means i can't use my wireless network with it for now at least).
I have not had this issue but BT (blue tooth) always on has solved other issues of not turning on. You might give it a try.
