Can't install Active Sync on a second PC

Hi to all,

Just got my X51v yesterday. Loaded active Sync on my work machine and everything hooked up and worked OK. Now trying to install active sync (from the Dell CD) to my home machine, (which is on a network with my work PC), but the install won't complete. Tried downloading V3.8 from MS and installing that but still won't load. Seems like its looking for a driver on the CD, but can't find it. I would like to be able to load software to the Axim from the home machine too. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for any thoughts?

Are you running a firewall? What OS are you running?

Running XP Pro & Symantec firewall. On one of the attempts I made I did disable the anti virus and firewall... I often have to do that for some of the engineering software I use. Didn't seem to make a difference but in all honesty, I guess I should try it again certain that they are both off.

I kind of ran into a simlar issue, but I was able to istall 4.0 or 4.1 with out a hitch. The issue now is it wont let me sync two pc to one x51v like like 3.8 & the X50v did. Evertime I try it tells me that i have to delete my partnership on the other pc first. If you do get it to install, it will be intersting to see if it'll work

Thanks to David for the reference to V4.1. Unfortunately it did not solve the problem. Made sure everyting I had done was unistalled, both firewall & antivirus off. 4.1 started install normally then box comes up and says it was interrupted and install not complete. This is before the sync cable is even plugged in. Most perplexing. Tried getting to Dell support but they have failed to register the service tag # on my Axim so I have not been able to penetrate to a human being there. Sounds like it would not do much good anyway based on other posts. Does anyone know if the active sync software is a single box license? I am going to have to sleep on it I guess.

Any comments welcome.

continuing saga

A follow up post for those remotely interested. Tried installing ActiveSync on my wifes machine running Win2k. A little bumpy because Activesync didn't like being plugged into an external USB hub. I had read on the MS site that this might be an issue. Locked up the machine and killed the mouse, which was also on the hub. Gave them both a primary USB port and both were happy... the install completed and ActiveSync works fine. Apparently the Axim keeps track of PCs it has been connected with and needed a name for it. Other than that, no problemo.

So, there is something unique going on with the other PC.... mystifying. Something internal "interrupts" the install.

Still happy to entertain any theories out there.

I had this problem installing Active Sync. Turns out a third party email program overwrote the MAPI32.DLL file when it became the default mail client.

To fix, run c:\windows\system32\fixmapi.exe, then try installing active sync and you should be in good shape.

I can't believe it was this simple. I've been trying to install active sync 4.5 for over a year. I could only get 3.8 to go on my stupid computer.

Thanks for giving me the answer. "c:\windows\system32\fixmapi.exe"

Stupid M$ couldn't even tell me why it was broken.
