Buying a x51v, Good idea? Bad Idea?
Hey Guys

I was planning to purchase an Axim x51v. I wanted to know as much information about the PPC before i bought it, so i came to the most reliable source.

From reading the threads on this site, i've notice some major and minor issues with the x51v.

All i'm gonna use the PPC is for school work, listening to music, and watching movies.

I was wondering if the "white screen of death", and the "not powering on" will be an issue to the x51v if you dont install any 3rd party programs? Cause i've noticed that people with these problems have incompatiable software installed on WM5.

So is the Axim x51V a worthy buy or should i consider another PPC?

The only way to know is buy it. I am sure there are many more here who have a good unit than not. You generally only see the strong comments when they have a bad unit. The ones with the good ones probably don't add their two cents as often. The X50v had its problems, but most are very happy with it. Good luck on your decision.

Aside from Dell shorting me the power cord I love mine. The VGA is wonderful. I've had no white screen of death, it always turns on and off , Activesync 4.0 works perfectly, both USB and Bluetooth, WI-FI works well, really I have no complaints except...A LOT of programs have not been optimized for WM 5.0. I'm sure new versions will be out within the next few months but for now be prepared to not have Avantgo, Pocket Informant and a few others. I sorta wonder if the problems some folks are having is due to installtion of programs meant for earlier versions of WM.

Eventually probably a good idea. Right now probably a bad idea.

Yeah I also thought that the problems they are facing were because of the installed programs that are for earlier version of WM.

Thanks guys for the response. This has eased my mind on purchasing the x51v

wait a bit if you want. search the forums about the problems. i just ordered mine with the last batch of discounts(wait for a deal dont spend over $400 on it) and from what ive gathered its still WM5 thats the main problem take that how you will~wait for updates then buy or buy and wait~ either way dell makes rather solid pdas(my x30 went through a car wreck) and get questions around class when your "working"

Are you guys saying that Pocket Informant doesn't work with WM5.0? I just ordered one of these and if that app doesn't work, I won't be happy! How about Agenda Fusion?

I say go for it, most apps are being updated as we speak, and look how many people here are waiting for WM5 cd for x50 series to go on sale. The x50 series had many bugs, but subsequent updates corrected those. You will love the VGA also if you go for the X51v!

I'd wait a bit for Dell and Microsoft to resolve the various problems with Activesync, dismounting storage cards, lock ups, power up failures, and a Bluetooth stack that does more than cause a little blue led to flash.

ActiveSync workks perfectly with my X51V

Three different brand storage cards work perfectly, zero problems

Zero Lockups

Use Bluetooth to sync through Activesync every day. Has worked perfectly everytime.

Unfortunately, Activesync hasn't worked for others like it has for you. It works for me too but others are having problems and Microsoft still hasn't released it officially because it isn't quite there yet.

The Bluetooth stack in the X50v is superior to the weak one in the X51v.

I just purchased a x51v yay!!!!!! I just hope there isn't any problems, but I did also purchase the accidental warranty for just incase something does happen along the way, even if it's a defective unit or my fault. .

I was just wondering what brands of storage cards work well with the x51v? I was looking foward into buying one for myself.

Pretty great deals out there.........I caught one of those "rare" deals that pops up every ten days! Got 20% off plus 15% off plus bought a $35 discount coupon from eBay for two dollars! (and they all worked) bringing the price down to about $315 plus shipping......added a second battery and (probably unnecessary) added three years of exchange and three years of "dropped PDA" protection, plus a cord to synch while travelling and with shipping it still only came to $410 or so. The prices may drop, but they ain't dropping much below that in the next six months or so.......and then LUCKY ME!(OKAY-THIS IS AN IRRELEVANT SIDE POINT) found someone on eBAY selling a Piel Frama case in like NEW condition. I won it for $25 and that included a new Dell 2200 battery.......END OF IRRELEVANT POINT.....my point is that it will certainly work for now with basic programs, and you can add other ones as they become compatible. The real question is if you need it now. If so, then get it because being without it for six months in order to save $30 may NOT be worth it. On the other hand, if you don't really crave it, you can wait. But I don't think the prices will drop much below what you can get if you watch for the discounts......

"Are you guys saying that Pocket Informant doesn't work with WM5.0?"

Actually, I've been using Pocket Informant 2005 Rev 3 on my x51v and it's been working great under WM5. I love how much information they can cram onto a VGA screen and have it be totally legible.

Also, for what it's worth, so long as I keep my SD card out of my x51v when it's powered off, I've had no troubles. It's a good device overall, and an upcoming ROM update should resolve the current issues people are facing.

It will work, but there is issues that PI developers can not fix bu themselves. MS supplied POOM APIs to access calendar data which is very buggy. In turn, built in calendar pgm by MS does not use POOM and therefore does not have these problems. My suspision that none of the 3rd party software will work correctly with calendar until MS will fix POOM and that will happen God know when. My issue was that when you create a full day appointment it will switch end time to a previous day - major problem for me.
