Disappearing CF card........potential cause......
Hi guys. I have been playing aroung with my axim quite abit to solve this one and I think I know what is causing it. I have isilo 4.29beta2 installed and every time I open a large document on the CF card (greater than 50mB) using this reader the next time I turn on the unit the CF card has disappeard. So I deleted my files larger than this on the card and the problem has been solved. Thats weird. What the heck is going on?

You may be onto something. I got a CF card 512MB for my GPS maps, the map installed is about 260MB. I've noticed the CF card disappearing every once in a while. Maybe it is something to do with opening a file largr than 50MB.

My CF card disappers as well and I am not opening any large files from it. I end up shutting the device down and removing and reinstalling the CF card. When I boot up again the CF card is available.

I have the same problem with an older Lexar 256 MB CF card. Everytime I hit the power button, then power it back on, it gives me a "Unrecognized Device" error. When I take the CF card out, and put it back in, then everything is fine. My SanDisk Ultra 2 works fine...

Maybe that is why my CF card disappears, but not my SD card. I have one large movie file on the CF card, but no large individual files on my SD card. I have heard many people complain about their SD card disappearing in the X51, but this is the first time I heard another person have problems with their CF card.

Well, it turns out I just purchased a new CF GPS, the Haicom 303III, which can be used either as a serial mouse that is hardwired to the bottom port or used in CF mode, which of course is inserted into the slot. Mouse mode works perfectly fine. However, CF mode will only work as long as I do not interact with the GPS software in any way. The moment I begin to interact with the software, the connection drops. A simple reinsertion of the card restores the connection until I enter a new destination.

The map data is stored on a SD card, so perhaps each time the SD card slot is tapped by the Axim, the data stream is lost in the CF slot. Just a theory....

I wonder if this is why the Haicom 305III comes with an onboard SD card slot on the side of the GPS receiver? It's possible they know that a sd card inserted into the PDA's slot causes issues. Have you contacted Haicom yet? I'm very curoius, as I'm in the market for a GPS solution, and was leaning towards this, or a BT receiver.

I have contacted buygpsnow and they said to send it back to them for warranty repair. I don't want to go through the hassle as I'm really not that keen on using it in CF mode anyway after seeing the sheer size of the thing. They did offer that I could purchase the bluetooth slipper at the "bundle" price. That's fair, as I'd rather just carry the unit in my pocket or bag if I'm out on foot or geocaching. And, having the same unit perform dual car nav (mouse mode) and "on foot" functions is convenient and cost beneficial. So, I'm not too miffed, but others should know this unit I think is unreliable in the x51 at least.
