Computer doesn't recognize my Dell Axim X51. And viceversa.
Okay. This is my problem. My Dell Axim X51 is only two weeks old, and I had decided to try to sync it with my computer. At first, my computer recognized the axim being plugged into it, but that was before I had installed the drivers from the CD. The download went fine. Everything was good. The program is both now on my computer and my Axim. Now afterwards, it's telling me to sync my Axim. And the connection is not being picked up. So I restarted it. And then I tried it again. Nothing. And then I spent three hours going through the Microsoft Active Sync help. And I knew I followed everything correctly. Still nothing is showing up. The version of Active sync I'm using in 4.0. So I don't know if there is something wrong with my computer or the software. There shouldn't be anything wrong with my computer, because I used to have another palm pilot on it. But I uninstalled the software when I got my new one. Can someone please help me. I really don't want to have to call Dell. *prays that there isn't anything wrong with her stupid USB cable*
Do you have a software firewall installed. If so, disable it and retry.
I was having the same problem with my x51v. I then deleted my sygate firewall from the system tray (thereby deactivating it) and the syncing and recognition process occurred without a problem.
If this doesnt work, consider uninstalling the firewall, and try to sync.
The other query I have is are you connecting through a USB hub? I hate USB hubs - WITH A PASSION :). Try connecting the axim directly to a port on your computer.
I just tried Syncing for the first time too. It looked like it was trying but never would get anywhere. I just called dell and they said they had several complaints about not being able to connect with the new ActiveSync 4.0 version. They are currently working with Microsoft to try to figure out why some people can sync their X51v and others can not. They said they'd call me on Friday with an update.
The owners manual tels you to install activesync before you hook up your cradle and axim. Did you do this? You may need to uninstall activesync, disconnect cradle, reinstall activesync, then hook up cradle and axim. This has worked for some.
I second the Firewall post. Had very similar issues with syncing until I discovered that it sets up it's own Network adapter and acts like it's own network which throws off the Firewall till you give appropriate permissions.
...and I second the post about connecting before installing AS. In additional to removing and reinstalling ActiveSync, it may help to go into the System Hardware and remove the mobile device from the list.
So, I suggest that you:
1) uninstall AS
2) remove device from system hardware (it may need to be connected in order to actually show in the list, so connect it, remove it from the hardware list, then disconnect it)
3) disable the firewall (that is, stop it from loading during bootup - just disabling many brands, including ZoneAlarm and Norton Internet Security, after the fact often does not work).
4) Reboot your PC
5) Put installation CD into drive.
6) Follow installation instructions
7) When prompted, connect your device.

I ran into this problem the past 2 day with my brand new X51.. I had the USB cable plugged into one of the USB ports on my Dell 1901FP -- the computer would pick it up, but ActiveSync would not.. The solution was while it was plugged in, remove the device from the network adapters in Device Manager. Then unplug the unit.. Went to Add/Remove programs -- found ActiveSync, clicked 'Change', told it to Repair... Rebooted... Then, I plugged it into a USB port on the computer itself, and all was fine.
Okay. Bigger problem. I can't seem to find the Dell Axim on my computer's device manager. I find it in the "add hardware section", but it has this big yellow question mark over it. When I click it, all it says is "drivers are not installed." Help....
I'm up and running! Thanks so much everyone for your help. I was smart enough to follow the manual and install the software before connecting my axim. I wasn't smart enough to disable the firewall. I thought I did but turns out my work computer had 2 different programs I had to disable to get connected. I'm just so glad I'm finally sync'd! I'm so excited about my new dell. My last handheld was a CASSIOPEIA (yuck).
My active Sync seems to install fine (Ver. 4.2), & the device is recognized by the computer. The problem comes in when the "Found New Hardware Wizard" runs, after it finds "new Windows-based mobile device"; it reports "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation." I followed RickNY's & Ike's post and opened the relative ports in Norton's Firewall, but still can't get ActiveSync to recognize the device. I have 1 Gb of RAM and PLENTY of disk space, so don't really know where the "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation." error is coming from. Any ideas?
I have exactly the same problem as <Segniust>. I tried it al still nothing happens. The difference is that it was working until I tried to install a iGPD SD module on my X51, now I can not sync and my device is not recognized. Any ideas? I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks,
