Will going back to ActiveSync 3.8 solve these problems? I found this fact sheet on MS it talks about how to go back to an earlier version of ActiveSync.

I put my experience in the activesync forum, but I wanted to put it here as well:
Quote:
I just wanted to document my experience here with error code #85010014. The exact message that I got was "activsync encountered a problem on the desktop. Support Code 85010014."

I googled and researched that error code last night for about 6 hours and came up with nothing, except for what people have said here: detect and repair outlook, uninstall office, reinstall office, etc.

I shot off a nasty e-mail to Microsoft telling them that it was ridiculous that they didn't have anything in their answer base that referred to that problem. I was on support-chat with Dell and went from department to department (I kept transcripts of everything) and they were absolutely worthless.

I should let you know that I did find a link that I found interesting: http://www.pocketpcjunkies.com/Uwe/F...Sync-4-Problem
Quote:
"If your Outlook is in cached mode, and disconnected, and you create a partnership and sync for the first time, it will fail the way in the log you posted. If you are syncing with the same laptop, try to create partnership and sync at least once in your office. Otherwise, try connect your home outlook via VPN, set your outlook to offline mode then disconnect, and try sync again. Once you can sync you are set.
I should also state that I didn't have this problem until I did a hard reset of the device (per Dell's instructions on how to get rid of the power-on issue) and tried to sync with my work laptop while I was at home.

Well, I come into the office this morning, ready to detect and repair outlook, reinstall office, and if those don't work box it up and get a refund, and whaddya know...it synched while my computer was attached to the network.

Anyway, for what it's worth, this has been my experience. Hope that it helps someone out there.

85010014 - dunno what else to try

Ok, I've tried most of the suggestions in here which apply to me on the 85010014 problem (thanks especially to Chris De Herrera for his ActiveSync 4.0 FAQ which solved a lot of other problems). I have re-installed Windows XP on my desktop PC and started from scratch, because I was unable to remove or re-install AS4.0. I probably don't count as I'm just a home user who wants to keep copies of his contacts, calendar, tasks and notes on his desktop PC. So I have no exchange server, etc.

I bought the X51V new and have been unable to get it to sync with Outlook, just the file synching works. I installed Outlook 2002 from the Dell CD, humored MS by making it the standard e-mail program (normally have Eudora 6.2), enabled only contacts, but still get the 85010014. Repair install of Outlook brings no relief, likewise repair install of AS 4.0. Someone in this thread suggested deleting the device in AS. When I started to do that, it warned me that it would delete all my contacts, tasks and calendar ON THE POCKET PC, so I of course didn't want that. I would have thought it might delete them in Outlook (where they don't exist yet anyway :-), but not on the X51V. So I appear to be stuck.

All I want to do is to have some backup on the desktop of those things which I've entered on the X51v. I ran the all-or-nothing data backup (just for PIM info) which comes with the X51V and copied from the storage card to my desktop PC, so I presumably have a backup, but no way to look at the files to see if it worked, without trusting it and testing a restore. If I can't get it to sync with Outlook, than I guess my only solution is to wait for Sprite backup to support WM5.0, or look for another PIM application which does not require Outlook, which I haven't found yet.

I like the Axim X51V very much (except for the necessity to soft reset with the SD card, which Dell will hopefully fix soon), but with these ActiveSync problems I have the feeling that I'm being used to beta test the system after paying $600 for it. Any other ideas as to what I could try? Thanks.

I forgot to mention two other difficulties with AS4.0 and the Axim X51v:

1. If the X51v is in the cradle when the desktop PC boots up, it never gets found, stays "connecting..." forever (as seen by revolving green AS ball in system tray).

2. Occasionally, following boot/startup of the XP desktop PC and with the X51v not in the cradle, rapimgr.exe is running constantly, using 95-100 % of the CPU, according to Task Manager, and placing the device in the cradle has no effect. The only solution is to reboot the desktop PC and hope it doesn't happen again. It seems to happen about once every five boots of the desktop PC. Any solution to this? Thanks.

To AximBob37: I've had that same problem, same error code, several times. Two solutions have worked, so far. The first is the Repair and Detect in Outlook. If that didn't work, I deleted the partnership with the device and created a new one. I do not remember losing all of my Contacts, etc. But it sounds like you have no other option.

Hi. New kid on the block and my first posting. I have a Dell 51v and have had my share of syncing my PDA via USB connection. Tect support sent me a new cradle Rev.A00. (I had a Rev.A02). Look on the bottom of the cradle for the model number. This solved some of my problems. However, Support code 85010014 kept coming up. I corrected this issue by deselecting "contacts" on my PDA. For me this is no problem since I am retired but for others this is not a good solution. I am also getting Support Code 85002009 which deals with exchange server credentials. I am using sync.avantgo.com:80 as my server. How do I check credentials? I am open to suggestions.

At work, we too use CorporateTime for calendering (& I use Thunderbird for email). Since I've upgraded my X50V to WM5 from 2003SE I've been unable to sync with my calendar. What is this 'Oracle Connector'? Is it manual or automatic? Any other help to get this thing working properly again is appreciated. Thanks!

As for ActiveSync setting up network connection, this is done because Microsoft has decided that the device will communicate to your PC via TCP/IP. If you check your network connections you will see that an IP address has been assigned to Local Connection #2. (May only be visible when the PPC is plugged in). The issue in doing it this way is firewalls and network optimizer software seem to affect ActiveSync's ability to communicate with the device. If you use firewall's, you have to open certain ports (found on microsoft's web pages www.microsoft.com/mobile). This is the biggest cause of issues however if you use Network optimizer software which might compress network traffic for performance reasons, make sure you unbind it from Local Connection #2 (if that is the connection that gets created when you plug your device to your PC). A lot of people have disabled the optimizer software on there wireless network card or local connection #1 but that has no effect on the connection between your PC and PPC. You must disable the optimizer software on the active connection for your PC and PPC! I hope this helps!

To rlazar: Many thanks, I finally got it to work by simply installing AS 4.1, which of course created a new partnership anyway, so one or the other or both fixed it. Now I'm getting more reminders than I really care about all over my desktop :-)

...but don't have the Axim in the cradle when you boot the desktop, or it will apparently never get found with AS 4.1. With AS 4.0, it also didn't find the device if inserted on boot, but said "connecting", and I could remove and re-insert it and it would get found. But with AS 4.1, I have to remove the device from the cradle, reboot XP and then wait for it to come up again before re-inserting the device.

My proxy situation...

I am a tech on a helpdesk. I am supporting a user with this exact issue and we have an Exchange server. I was able to make this stupid toy work by installing SP2 for Office 2003.
As an aside:
It burns me like nothing else when monster corporations release their beta tester garbage into the general populous for testing. And it is the techically able, not the idiots that purchase these toys, that are burdened with the ramifications and, paradoxically, enable MS and Dell to keep doing it again and again. Fark them all, and all those who purchase techie toys and haven't the foggiest about how these things work.
