X51 and sync with email/calendar/contacts

OK, I've been reading the threads about problems people have been having with WM5/ActiveSync4.0. Many people have had problems syncing with their corporate email/calendar server, and I think I have found out why.

I was banging my head against the wall most of one day last week, trying to get my boss's new X51v to work. I tried Chris De Herrera's ActiveSync FAQ, and the troubleshooting guide on microsoft.com. Finally, in desperation I called Dell support. The guy I spoke to said they have received many calls on this problem, and it is due to the redesigned OS.

The new WM 5 security "features" prevent connecting to a mail server. This prevents the Axim from connecting to anything except (1) a locally stored Outlook .PST file, or (2) a Microsoft Exchange server. All other options do not work, based on what I have found out.

In my work environment, we use GroupWise for email, calendar, contacts, etc. Previous versions of Windows Mobile connected to Outlook, and depended on Outlook to connect to the GroupWise server. The new OS syncs in a different way. The handheld shows up as a networked device. But the network connection is crippled (for "security" reasons) such that it is not allowed to connect to servers.

I intend to return the X51v and get an X50v with WM2003SE. :realmad:

[edit] I should note that, like many other Aximsite members, I get the 85010014 error when I attempt to sync.

MS is trying to make everyone use a predefined set of software. My guess that MS BT stack was crippled for security reasons as well. It probably will protect "out of the box" users but if you need a custom solution - fogedabaudid...

Thanks for posting this. I have been having continuous, identical problems with ActiveSync and finally determined, like you, that it was an incompatibility with Groupwise that was the ultimate source of the problem.

I really want to keep the x51v however so I'm going to somehow find way to make it work.

hi,

I've exactly the same problem, need sync with two Exchange based calenders on two locations. Would be very useful to be able sync the two machines as with WM2003. Any ideas welcome where we cans tart investigation to make this work...or any other sync software that is able to do that.

bye

When I tried to install Outlook on my company computer, I also found out real fast that Groupwise and Outlook DO NOT coexist well on the same computer. My home office support confirmed this, as well as a friend of mine who is a manager with HP tech support. There are some work-arounds, but what I've found is that it's just too much re-engineering. I loaded Outlook on my home PC and have no syncing issues.

I have run into the same issues with Mozilla Thunderbird. Everytime I choose it as my default e-mail program, the next time I reboot Actives(T)ync has a problem. I do the "Detect/Repair" reboot and life is good again.

I have also tried Novell's PDA Connect software on the WM5 device. It appears to be incompatible with WM5. I use it on my X30, because in my experience, it syncs contacts and email better than ActiveSync. I know several people who use a combination of ActiveSync and PDA Connect to get their PDAs up to date. I don't like how PDA Connect interacts with the Calendar, but others have good luck with it.

There is or may soon be a WM5-compatible version of GWAnywhere. The downside of this alternative is that it requires some server admin setup to work.

I have an Axim x51v, and was also seeing the 85010014 error with ActiveSync.

I was able to resolve this by deleting the partnership. Try this:
1) Disconnect your Axim
2) Open ActiveSync and select File->Delete Mobile Device
3) Connect your Axim
4) Create new partnership
5) Sync

I was using AS 4.0

My palm died and I took the plunge and ordered a X51v

THEN I found this site. My Axim arrived today and I am SO regretting it.

I run Groupwise at work so of course have the 85010014 sync problem.

It's also a A00 unit and I haven't even tried putting my SD card in.

Should I just send it back? Or has anyone managed to get a usable PDA out of this when using GW?

Paul,

Check your return policy. You may be able to return it ONLY if you have not yet opened it.

Quote:
Hardware Products and Accessories: Unless you have a separate agreement with Dell or except as provided in the section below, all hardware, accessories, peripherals, parts and software that is unopened and still in its/their sealed package or, if delivered electronically, that has not been downloaded, may be returned within twenty-one (21) days from the date on the packing slip or invoice for a credit or a refund of the purchase price paid, less shipping and handling and applicable restocking fees.

I have also been monitoring the GroupWise product support forums on Novell's web site, hoping that Novell PDA Connect will be upgraded to support WM5. So far, I've seen questions but no answers. The Novell forums are here:

[edit] Someone from Portugal has reported some success:

I'm trying Intellisync Handheld Edition 5.5.0 and so far no problem
between Axim VX51v and GW 6.5. You can try it for 30 days and hoping that
Novell updates their PDA connect.

At my office, we use Netscape for email and Oracle Corporate Time for Calendering. I do use Outlook as my IMAP client and use Oracles Connector to sync my Oracle calendar to Outlook. I do not have any issues in setting this up and my Axim sync's very well.

As for ActiveSync setting up network connection, this is done because Microsoft has decided that the device will communicate to your PC via TCP/IP. If you check your network connections you will see that an IP address has been assigned to Local Connection #2. (May only be visible when the PPC is plugged in). The issue in doing it this way is firewalls and network optimizer software seem to affect ActiveSync's ability to communicate with the device. If you use firewall's, you have to open certain ports (found on microsoft's web pages www.microsoft.com/mobile). This is the biggest cause of issues however if you use Network optimizer software which might compress network traffic for performance reasons, make sure you unbind it from Local Connection #2 (if that is the connection that gets created when you plug your device to your PC). A lot of people have disabled the optimizer software on there wireless network card or local connection #1 but that has no effect on the connection between your PC and PPC. You must disable the optimizer software on the active connection for your PC and PPC! I hope this helps!

I often get the 85010014 error and find it can usually be fixed by going to Internet Options> Programs and changing the default e-mail program from Eudora (in my case) back to Outlook. Clicking on a mailto link opens Outlook so I have to just copy the mailto address to the clipboard, open Eudora and paste it into the "To" address. When that doesn't work, I do a repair of Outlook using Add/Remove Programs.

I've managed to get contacts and calendar working using intellisync as Miguel suggested. It means you have to manually sync but I'm used to that from the Palm so it doesn't bother me.

Haven't set up the e-mail syncing yet, yet just trying to get the other stuff working right. I expect some WM5 patches to come out shortly that might help.

I think I have fairly well determined that the 85010014 error in my case is due to the fact Outlook is basically just a front end on top of Groupwise. There is no local Outlook database(?) on my machine and Activesync will only look at that and not other e-mail programs.

Still don't like the calenda view as much as Dtbk5, and that's after installing pocket informant....

boulderer, I think, is correct. I am also using GW6.5 and I was somewhat surprised to find there was no .pst file anywhere on my system.

I was also going to try PDA Connect too with WM5 but since that doesn't yet appear to be compatible I guess I'll try Intellisync next.

I have to say that I surely would've returned my Axim by now if not for the wonderful contributions from the folks here at aximsite.
