X51v "bugs" being conquered :)

After suffering from many of the reported bugs since i received my X51v, through trial and error, I'm slowly getting a dependable unit. It's not yet as complete as my former WM2003 ppc, but in many ways, it's getting there, and it is promising for the future.

For the prospective owners, I'd like to share a few conceptual errors I made since I got the 51v:

Error #1. Tried to replicate my WM2003 unit into my 51v and assumed that my WM2003 software would be fully or mostly compatible: It's FAR from the truth. Numerous red-eye and several hard resets later, I finally built a dependable unit. Even though I'm still missing some capabilities, updates and patches are coming out fast for WM2003 programs and in many ways, generate new interest and welcomed fresh capabilities into older software.

Error #2. Expect an all-around faster machine. Not a good idea. You'll have to give a second chance at first impression here... The 51v is a slow booter - but - it performs most adequately after that.

Error #3. Considered giving up. I don't yet see the advantage of switching to WM5, but I know that the WM2003 line of updates is ending. MS will patch - Dell will update - and it will just keep getting better. I figure the worst is over for me.

Bottom line at this point: I'm content with the current state of the unit and totally looking forward to upcoming hw/sw developments.

developments is a nice way of saying there was a lack of testing prior to release, but I agree I am looking forward to a ROM fix for these issues most of the X51V customers have documented here and at other user sites. BTW a big thank you for all that contribute here at this site. Tech support at Dell should just be channeled here!

I too believe I am getting my device to a more stable place but until I get a ROM update, I will consider this device to be very fragile. I am bothered that I can't drive it like a Ferrari but have to drive it like a Ford Escort just to keep it from exploding. I recently sent an email to Michael Dell and got a call from an engineer in the AXIM dev team. He assured me he would be back in touch with me next week with some good news. Fingers are crossed!

Personally, I'll take the bugs if the new OS/software adds value to the device. If you don't want WM5, you can buy an X50. The alternative is to have no access to the newest OS/software for several more months (just ask HP4700 users how that feels).

:exc: I'm really thinking hard about what I think! I now have a computer that fits in my pocket and I want it to do what the computer that fits in my shoulder bag to do. Apple Iphone? I'm satisfied with a n electronic diary, it does away with my self consciouness about my chicken scrawl handdwriting! The extra functionality that goes with add on programs is a bonus, be thankful that there are people out there continually improving the things that you can do with your axim, and microsoft is probably working on the platform too.

Wow, now that's some thread necromancy, all the way from 11-09-05. There's an award for that kind of thing.
