Ok, I got thinking about the SD/CF card disappearance and the "Can't Power On" issue and am convinced they are totally related. Because of the new power scheme that WM5 uses to keep all information in memory, I was thinking that perhaps when you turn off the device the OS continues to operate. If you were using an APP that accessed the SD/CF card and then powered off, perhaps the device cuts the power to the card. If this was true, the OS would start hunting for the SD card and eventually time out. So I ran a test.
I constantly get these issues when I listen to MP3 stored on a SD card. What I tried (over and over again) was to make sure I stopped WMP before I turned off the device. So far, I haven't had this issue. My device has always turned on and the SD has remained present. On the reverse, I tried leaving WMP open and waiting 15 minutes and turning it on. No chance, soft reboot only. What I believe is the app that was talking to the card continues to look for it unless you shut the app down. Since there is no power at the card, it doesn't exist to the OS.
IT's great that your're trying to pinpoint one thing. I have the x51, and I'm using a 256 CF card. I notice that I have power on issues if I lock the axim down with the slider button on the side.
I've been pretty particular: turning it off before I take it out of the cradle, putting the screen on the "my info" only for reboot.
It's still a PITA, but today was the first day I could make a clear association between the power on issue and the slide button.
What I randomly suspect, somehow, is reminders or tasks in conjunction with the lockdown slider. I guess I should eliminate all from my device and see if the power problem still exists. Like whatever, if it does or does not, if that's what's locking this thing up, then it defeats the whole purpose of a PDA.
I lose my CF card whenever I go thru Activesync.
I'm holding off calling dell. I think Nov 19 sounds like the ideal date.
I have noticed that it doesn't work if it is turned off before being removed from the cradle while charging. The memory card theory makes sense, however, being a user of TCPMP, not WMP, I only occasionally notice that the songs go missing and the only way to fix it is by soft-resetting. I make it through most days without having to soft reset due to the device not turning on.

Here's what I've experienced. The unit not turning on only happens when my SD card is inserted. I experience the problem whether I've had applications accessing the SD card or not. I agree with you that WM5 is running things even when the unit is powered down. For example, I exit all applications from the switcher bar and then I fully power off the unit for the night. In the morning, I power the unit on which is basically a soft boot because I shut the unit totally down at night. The first thing I do is to launch and check the switcher bar and I see ActiveSync running. The unit is not in the cradle and hasn't been all night.
I was glad to find this site, as I have the same issue. Brand new Axim, and it would require soft resets for no apparent reason. And my CF card wasn't recognized. One reset got my card recognized. But I haven't figured out the power on issue. I wasn't aware of leaving a program on, but now I will watch for that. Do you think repeatedly soft resetting has any cumulative damaging effect?

I saw one person who dc'd all Resco software on his machine and had no problems after that, I hate to do that because I use them so much.
Just out of curiousity, how many people here who are having problems are also using Resco Software??
Thanks,
Locutus

I had the Power-on issue and have never had any Resco software on my X51. It took three weeks before I had any trouble and memory cards are always recognized whenever they are in place (I only use sd cards, however). Even after the problem developed, the PPC always has started as long as I don't have any card in place when the Axim is turned off.

I have a 1GB CF card and a 512mb SD card. My X51V works fine as long as I do not leave the cards in the unit. With them in the unit as I turn it off I get all types of goofy stuff going on. Not turning on, cards droping off the face of the earth, not being able to back up to a card, lockups. All of these are fixed of course with a soft reset. But I decided to leave the cards out so that I can be assured my unit will turn of and function for me. Its a lot to ask as I keep tons of data used by the X51V and my PC on the cards. But until a ROM fix comes out its my best way of keeping my unit functioning whith minimum problems.
