I believe it is a problem with Windows 2000 Pro. Right now I leave my storage cards in and BlueTooth on while the unit is off and all the problems went away. I will wait for a better upgrade in the future.

If we assume that the A04 update will not work in W2K due to a USB driver issue, has anyone tried applying it using Bluetooth?

hi all, just share my experience here

i've facing the same problem when i update the rom by using my notebook (WinXP Home SP2). This notebook have installed activesync 3.8 previously so i've uninstall it and install the latest version which is activesync 4.1. (Is that one of the causes of this problem?)

so i decide to try my luck on my desktop pc (WinXP Pro SP2) and it works!!

i think the main causes is from the hardware? may be USB .......

ps: my pda didn't install any program yet since i'm just received it.

If I Can borrow someone's XP machine I "might" try it but...doesn't sound like the A04 is quite ready for prime time.
I had the exact same experience. I tried to get help from Dell chat and was almost led to install a X30 rom.

DITTO. I am running WIN2K Pro on a Dell Inspiron laptop. The failure indication is exactly the same as the first post. Since the WIN2K O/S predates the ROM update (as does the USB driver) it follows they are not the item that is buggy.

The problem is a poorly implimentented and fragile "fix" that has not been properly tested. They know they have a heterogeneous user environment, with numerous hardware and software configurations. The releases should be tested on these platforms to ensure effective distribution. Both Dell and M$ should have figured out how to do this by now.

I suspect their cost-cutting ventures are just coming to bear at this point. They save lots of money using clueless help-lines and technical support.

Perhaps we can start saving some money too. Don't buy Dell products until they have a good bill of health from those willing to alpha-test their products. I don't want to pay for the priviledge of doing their product test for them any more. If you do, enjoy...

Yes, i had the problem of not being able to upgrade my X51v.
However i think i managed a solution which worked for me. (Read: -F-O-R- M-E, no flaming the newbie if it don't work for you!).

I tried to update from A01 to A04 on My Intel GERG2 running 2ksp4, and my ABIT-KT7A AMD running 2ksp4 at home. No Luck.
Then I used my brothers Toshiba running XP Pro. Still no luck.

When updating I noticed that the PDA would 'reconnect' to the machine, i.e. the usb bubble would 'detect' a new device from the system tray. Now of course I had the PIN protection system running to prevent 'evil' poeple reading my email, and recall that the PDA won't connect to the PC without this PIN --> and that the message on the PDA when flashing fails is 'Handshaking with PC'. Well most protocols i've studied exchange keys on handshake, and if the program does not know the PIN - handshake fails.

So I simply turned this feature off (disable PIN/Password on power up). BOB's-ya-uncle, flash de PDA.
All is good with the world, MERRY CHRISTMAS.

[now, try not to flame if this don't work 4u]

I have the same problem with XP pro on my desktop. The message on my x51v screen is "Handshaking with PC...operation time out" I got an error message on my PC ...forgot what it said. Cannot turn off Axim or soft reset using button...and it no longer syncs with anything on my desktop.

What to do?

I'm kind of mystified as to why you would want to install A04 ROM when A12 has just been released...

What to do?
Here is what I ended up doing (after having a several second panic attack:exc: ):

1. Hard reset (reset button and simultaneous pressing of on/off button for a couple of seconds)
2. Restore backup (SPB backup worked great!:approve: )
3. Postpone any system updates indefinitely until directions and consequences et al become crystal clear
