x51v ROM update - Operation abort by host PC

Can anyone help me please? I decided to upgrade to A04 due to my battery overheating and draining on A01. However I cannot get it to update succesfully.

I downloaded the file and followed the instructions. This is more or less what happened after clicking the Install button...

1. x51v - screen cleared.
2. ActiveSync closes down
3. Windows 2000 - Copying files dialog - however the meter never moves from 0%
4. Windows 2000 - message "Found new hardware Dell USB Sync"
5. x51v - delay before message "Handshaking with PC"
6. x51v - delay before message "Image Update"
7. x51v - delay before message "Operation abort by host PC"
8. Windows 2000 - delay before message saying cannot proceed due to lost connection and asking me to check my USB connection to the x51v

I then had to hard reset the x51v to get a response from it.

I repeated the operation again with the same outcome (except for the New hardware message). I then tried upgrading to ActiveSync 4.1 and exactly the same thing happened as the first time I tried to upgrade the ROM.

This morning I then got the won't power on issue for the very first time on my freshly hard reset device with nothing yet installed... great.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Si

I have had the EXACT problem you described. Spoke to two techs online and now they are sending me a replcement unit. It may be a problem with Windows 2000 Pro as that is the operating system I tried on my two machines. If I Can borrow someone's XP machine I "might" try it but...doesn't sound like the A04 is quite ready for prime time.

Let me know how you get on with the replacement unit and if anyone has successfully applied A04 from a w2k pro machine I'd be very interested to hear about it.

Last night I attempted to do the upgrade from my work laptop (which is xp) however I could not get the x51v to connect via ActiveSync (guess it could be the antivirus software, but it is configured in such a way that I can't disable it). So instead I have had to reinstall all my software on A01.

Exact same problem here

I have had exact same problem - fully patched Win2k pro. My Axim x51v is A01, and I have not installed anything on it other than the driving game that came with the x51v.

First thing I did today was upgrade my AS4.0 to 4.1 - that seemed to go ok but I got a couple blue screens on my PC, so I uninstalled 4.1 and reinstalled 4.1.

I also disabled my firewall and disabled my antivirus when doing the A04 upgrade.

I didn't "hard reset" though - all I did was take battery out and put it back in - in essence a soft reset - and everything was fine with the unit. This totally sucks if the ROM upgrade works with WinXP only. I don't feel like spending $350 for a new PC operating system that won't really run on my 5 year old PC just to upgrade my Axim.

EDIT: My hunch is that it is a USB driver issue. I had a USB hub connected to my PC first time I tried (my Axim was directly connected to the PC, not through the hub). During the sync I lost USB connectivity to the devices connected through the hub (my printer and my UPS are both connected through the hub and I got some alerts). So after rebooting/etc, I removed the USB hub from the system. I still got same exact errors with the Axim upgrade, but the funny stuff with my other USB devices the first time makes me think that it's USB driver related.

I had the same issues trying to update using Win 2000. I was going to try on another Win 2000 machine, but I don't need to now, I guess.

I tried it on my fully updated XP, and I get the same error. Not sure how to resolve this problem, as I have tried it on a W2k, and XP machine, and I still get the same error.

I think Microsoft has gone the distance in dropping the ball on this. This is rediculous even for Microsoft standards.

Thank god I own a Mac and still have my H3950/2003 PDA, because XP with x51v/WM5 sucks arse!!!!!

I mean, what does work? Activesync fails, WM5 fails, BT fails, CF/SD fails, turn on fails, Dell support fails, ROM update fails....

For a new product, I would think both Dell and MS would be so embaressed. Maybe MS moved their develeopment team to the same place as Dell support?

Just wondered if the upgrade worked on the replacement unit?

Has anyone else been able to update using a W2K machine?

I've run into the same thing. Chatted w support, and the memo from Microsoft (yeah, it's a Microsoft upgrade) is that firewalls, etc are blocking the TCP req'd. MS suggests turning off any firewalls, antivirus, etc to see if that works. FYI - it doesn't. I shut down almost everything, and even tried to get it to work in Safe mode w networking, but no luck.

It is definitely a USB driver issue buried deep w/in W2K. (tried on 2 machines w W2K - an IBM and a Dell, and no solution, although it shut down my USB connections on the Dell!).

Think I'll just wait it out for a couple o' months and see if A05 comes out.

No the replacement unit did the same thing. I believe it is a problem with Windows 2000 Pro. Right now I leave my storage cards in and BlueTooth on while the unit is off and the problems went away. I will wait for a better upgrade in the future.

I have the same problem on my W2K machine (old home builded machine, Celeron 400MHz). Then I switch to use XP Home (Dell Dimension 2400) and no more problem on the A04 ROM update.
