Hmm Slow Wireless X51v 624

Hello,

Just got a new X51v that I'm giving to my wife for Christmas. Her main need for this thing is Email and contacts.

I really, really, really want this to connect to a wireless network and download the email from her pop3 account.

Synching from her PC, while possible is less likely to happen than if I can set this up to do it automagically. 4 kids, always on the go, etc....

Anyway, I got the wireless connection setup and I setup the email account through outlook, and it is painfully slow. There were about 25 emails on the pop account and there was one header downloaded.

Most times I try to connect it shows connecting for a long time, then logging in, then we get an error.

The wireless connection shows that it is up.
I checked the email settings using outlook express on a PC and they work fine.

I also noticed that Web browsing was very slow as well. I got to google and eventually got to a search results page, but it was slow too.

Any thoughts. My $350 purchase is really going to suck if this doesn't work at least somewhat better...

Thanks,

John

The x51v wireless is 802.11b which has a MAXIMUM speed of 11 mbs. If speed is your priority, you may want to consider an 802.11g compatible device, which has a max of 54 mbs.

unless you are downloading HUGE files, the 802.11b will be fine. check to see if the wifi setting for power save is turned on. that seeting is on the first page when you click on the WLan icon on the bottom of the screen. There may be other things too like possibly some interference on that channel. Do you use the network for other devices? start there and let us know.

Yeah, I wasn't worried about the 11b speed. I changed the power save mode from Auto to Disabled and voila. All my Email is downloaded and ready to go.

Thanks for the help. :)

Works fine with mine, with full WPA encrytion, although I initially had problem connecting to 1 of my 4 wireless APs, an ASUS mini access point. So try another Wi-Fi router, or at a cafe with Wi-Fi.

Did the same thing. Now the only time it gets slow connecting is when there are multiple WiFi connections it recognizes. My neibor has a WiFi and when I am in my house near his home it takes a while to connect. All other areas its very fast.

P.S. I have auto power safe mode on, and there are over 15 connections here. Perhaps choose a different channel on your router/access point

Make sure you have the latest Rom version. Made a big difference for me. My connect time was cut by at least 2/3's. Also, my soft resets have diminished markedly!!!

slow wireless connect

I met the same situation. When I connect to WiFi,
it needs a long time to "locating". However, when it is "opening", the speed is fast. I have already upgraded the rom to A04 and tried to disable power mode. I did not see any improvement. Is there any special settings?

I'd like to give you some hope that it's not the X51v unless it's defective. I have one and download e-mail from my pop account and it's not at all slow.
I download the entire e-mail, not just the headers... 25 e-mails download in about 30-40 seconds. So the X51v is very capable.

I do not have trouble on power save. Perhaps I should try loading larger files wirelessly.

Try changing your AP settings a little to reduce the locating problem.

a) change to another channel (6 is US default, try 11 or 1 something the neighbors aren't using)
b) change the network id from the default (aka Linksys ) make it your own ..
c) MUST - implement WPA/PSK security
d) DO the X51v to A04 rom update

If all else fails... sneek into your neighbors and cut his AP antenna off...:D

Good luck.

Thank-you,

Here is the site for X51V A04 rom update.

http://support.dell.com/support/down...os=PPM&osl=EN#

The file you want for X51v is: R112544.EXE

If the above link doesn't work, you can simply google for the filename.

Try installing a software called Wifi Companion, it speeds up things a bit.
