midas, I agree with you.. what you wrote above is partially correct. I have installed correctlly my USB BT device, but I still cannot see that mark (ActiveSync). I think is a matter of device or driver you are using...
I have attached 2 sugestive images;
PS: How can I post images, not as attachement? Thanks

OK, now that you have the proper drivers installed, you need to go through the rest of the steps to get this working. For my card, I have an option called ADVANCED CONFIGURATION. There are a number of tabs, but the one I needed was labled LOCAL SERVICES. There is a button on that screen that says ADD SERIAL SERVICE. You need to somehow add a serial service to your device. When you do it you will create another COM PORT on your system. Afte that you need to go into ACTIVESYNC CONNECTION SETTINGS and tell it to use the same COM PORT that you just added to your device. Once I did that it changed the name in the ADVANCED CONFIGURATION of the BT card from SERIAL PORT to ACTIVESYNC.
I hope that makes a little sense.

I wish I could give you more advise, but that's all I really know. The good news is that I have to suspect it's not your Axim that's the problem. If you can't see AS in your BT setup you're not even getting to the point where the Axim would come into play.

I'm getting the same problem.
I've made a screen shot of it, it can be found here:
http://blogs.etherpunk.com/index.php/Image:Axim_ss.png
I have had it working before I reflashed my Axim... so technically it _should_ still work becuase I didn't change anything on my desktop. Last time it took allot of piddling around to get it working. I was hoping to document the process this time, I'll probably format my computer and start over and do a hard-reset on the PDA and document everything I do; Unless I can figure it out in an hour or two without having to do that.
I can only assume it's a WM5 + Axim x51v + Windows XP SP2 issue...
I'm using Kensington Bluetooth Dongle (and yes I see the XP Enumerator in the device driver list; but it was also there before I reflashed the Axim and BT was working then too).
I'll report back when I find something interesting.

I tried to sync using my Widcomm drivers and never managed to get it to work. Un-installed Widcomm and tried the Bluesoleil drivers and it's working like a charm. Problem is I need the Widcomm drivers to sync with my E815. Guess I'll use the desktop for the E815 using the Widcomm drivers and use the laptop for my Axim using the Bluesoleil drivers. Hope this helps!

I can confirm the stories above. My X51v does connect to Activesync(4.0) via bluetooth, although it cost me about 10 hours in total to get it to work. Mainly trial and error, and unfortunately, I don't know what did the trick....
Main problem: the X51v would pair with my desktop; however, the available services on my desktop only included "serial port"; not "activesync".
I've tried connecting & reconnecting, pairing and unpairing for so many times that I completely lost count. The order might be important, or perhaps the key (I've read some accounts that said that only key 1234, or just 0000, would work...)
Apart from that, if you're in the process of setting up a sync relation, what is the correct order? Tell the X51v to "connect via bluetooth" in activesync, *and then* tell Activesync-on-desktop to connect? Or the other way around? I don't know....
Waht I do know, is that one moment, all of a sudden, when pairing X51v and desktop for the zillionth time, the available service on desktop DID SHOW a checkbox for "activesync" (instead of serial port).
After that, it's a piece of cake...
Bart
PS: My setup: X51v, Rom A01. Desktop side: Activesync 4.0, linksys USB Bluetooth dongle. And yes, the standard driver install (right from the CD) messed things up in XP-SP2. Linksys fortunately provided a nice 'erratum' how do set things up right in SP2.

Guys, finally I've figured it out... It was a matter of PIN code... It works (to me at least) only with 0000 PIN code.

I've never had problems with ActiveSync and BT since my iPaq 4150 and ActiveSync 3.7.
The setup is very simple. Just select a serial port on ActiveSync that is a BT serial port and that's it.

I have also tried every method mentioned in this thread and this site, however, bluetooth sync simply does not work. I can pair it, however, it does not sync. My combination is Dell 700m notebook + D-link dbt-120 bluetooth USB dongle + Axim 50v. I cannot try other drivers since I need d-link drivers to work with my bluetooth headset and the file transfer

I tried the pincode of 0000 and it did not work for me, as I expected it not to. Pincode should only matter for the initial connection, not for much else.
We should start to systematiclly figure this out.
I am 99% certain the problem is not with Windows XP.
I say this becuase I had it working, then udpated to A04 to A06 and it broke it again.
So, this leads me to believe that the problem is (somehow) with the Dell Axim.
It might be possible it's some kind of pairing to the bluetooth serial connections somehow, thusly leaving both BT clients to blame.
I have a friend who has another PDA, I'll see if I can get him to scan for services on my computer and see if it recongizes ActiveSync...
I'm going to to start putting a systemic FAQ on my wiki for the time being until the problem is figured out and then I will report back my findings with everyone here...
This is out and out sad. I explicietly stated on the phone I wanted to do this and the rep said it would be easy... only to find many people having problems...
all of a sudden, I don't trust dell anymore... although I'm sure everyone else ain't much better either... I'll get off my soap box now and get to work.

And, and for the record (just so everyone knows), my Bluetooth dongle is using the Widdcomm (sp?) driver and my enumerator is using the same driver as well...
I've heard that the enumerator can be the problem though, but those guides are more involved than I care to try and the moment.

Something intersting I just remember.
When I search for services on my laptop when BT worked, it detected FAST.
When I search for services on my laptop now (BT does not work), it's *slow* at detection.
Can I get someone that works and someone that doesn't (so we can make a controlled envonrment for proof both ways) to test their speeds?

On another note I found that 'refresh' under Bluetooth does not work. I proved this by disabling *all* of my bluetooth services on my laptop. I clicked refresh and it showed them still. I then unpaired them and then re-paired and it found none. I them unpaired and added the comm port on the laptop (that was using the same comm port in active sync) and then re-paired it. It found a serial port. The serial port that was supposed to be redirected to active sync.
Hmm.
