Why?
But I *had* it working before the upgrade.
Whatever is happening _must_ have some method to get it working.
I want wireless syncing. Leaving it on my cradle causes ACtivEsync to wake up frequently and thusly interrupting my gaming. I tried all the docs to stop that... didn't work. Wireless ruled.
The longer I have the Axim, the more I miss my iPaq I sent back. :waaa:
Sadly, I'm past my one month trial period.. so I'm stuck with it. So I'm _going_ to figure this out. It just means I don't recommend Axims to friends becuase tech support is unwilling to help.
Ok, I think I figured it out.
I now have it working.
* You *must* connect it via cradle before it will sync with the bluetooth. I failed in this one. This means after a flash, use the cradle.
* Make a service (incoming connection) via bluetooth. Note the comm port.
* Open up ActiveSync and tell it to look for it on that comm port you noted above.
* Delete the pair on your axim and your PC.
* Open up the Dell Axim and have it pair with your PC. You might see dialog boxes come up asking for the pinn and letting you know that it's fondling.. err, playing with your ports. Allow it.
* You should see the active sync service.
Part of the problem was that my Bluetooth driver would, by default, block access to the serial port... the icon would turn green (which I later learned, by accident, means it needs your input but isn't going to make a popup -- you must click it once to bring up the window) and then require you to allow it to work...
I have managed to get my Belkin BT adaptor working with Active Synch since 1st reporting I couldn't. I deleted any auto detected Serial Ports and then manually added a Bluetooth serial port on COM8 to the Local Services in the PC's Bluetooth manager which did the trick.

I have a Axim X51v running windows mobile 5 and Active Sync 4.1. I have no problems usin bluetooth to sync with my PC (the PC is on windows 2000). I set up the connection first using the USB cradle. Then paired the Axim with the laptop. Then I started active sync from the start menu and selected connect using bluetooth.

Hope this is of some help.

Same here although I set it up with bluetooth only the first time and it worked fine. all I had to do was setup a incomming port on the pc, configure Active sync on the pc to use a com port to communicate. Then attempt to sync from Active sync on the axim. I got this to work on 2 different persons.
ok, I should also elaborate on what the "serial port" means when you see it in the process.
That serial port is the one that is supposed to be used to connect to activesync (obviously).
One of three things is possible when you see that:
1.) You aren't allowing that comm port to communicate. I had this problem. Apparantly, when the icon has a green BT logo, it means it's transfering data OR needs your input (or both).
2.) Activesync isn't allowing serial connections (when it can't open the BT port, which happens if you don't have your BT adapter in, it will uncheck that box).
3.) The port you assigned isn't one that is set for incoming / serving.
For me, it was mostly my driver being vigilant and me not knowing that. My main problem was #1. Or at least, that is what I think the problem is.
This would explain why some people it works nicely for (it doesn't require authorization to access the serial port and it has a popup for any input it needs from you) and others it don't. All in all, it was a software problem on the PC/Laptop more than likely.
I've also heard a firewall can cause some problems, but since BT is a serialized resource, I don't know of any firewalls which monitor serial ports... that's a new one in my book.

That's the answer!! In my device manager, I found BT serial port 7, plus autodetected ones 36, 37 and 38. I deleted the last three, and that was that. I had spent some hours on this until I read your post - many thanks indeed :approve:

What BT software do you use on your Windows 2000? Widcomm? Blue Soleil? What version?

What services did you choose on the AXIM setup after you paired the devices? It usually provides check boxes for "serial port", "dialup networking"

I assume you did that on your AXIM. However, that is not possible unless you have clicked the "activesync" checkbox in the Bluetooth pairing step. Most versions of Widcomm BT software running under Windows 2000 do not have that service, and thus not visible from your AXIM when you pair your PC.

Kensington USB Dongle / WidComm (came with it by default)

That means your Bluetooth is serving the serial port (good thing) however it's not allowing access to ActiveSync (problem).
What is the port number for the BlueTooth serial port?
What is the Comm port in your Active Sync set to? (File->Connection settings; Allow connections to one of the following: Which port is this set to?)
My problem was I wasn't "granting" access. When it would connect, that BlueTooth icon in Windows XP (PC) would turn green and that meant one of two things:
* data was being transferred
* It needed my attention
The problem was that it wouldn't TELL me (other than changing the color of the icon) that it needed my attention. Sometimes I would click it and it would popup the list of bluetooth services and other times it would be "plesae enter pin code" or "do you want to allow acces to serial port X?" type thing.

You choose "ActiveSync". If, as I said eariler, the Bluetooth software isn't allowing ActiveSync to connect then you will see "serial port" becuase that's all it is at the moment, a serial port. Also, I bet your takes a while to scan too, huh? That's a timeout becuase it's waiting for that serial port to respond or have a program connect to it. If nothing answers, it just assumes it's a generic serial port.
Doesn't anyone that replied to this thread ever READ the THREAD HEADING ??? it's about X51V & BT + ActiveSync !!!!!
yet I've seen mentioned of x50v ... WidComm ...etc !!!!
WM5 + X51V ( or X50V WM5 updated)-- only works with MS stack for now ( or lack of it :) ) ... not WidComm !!!... maybe on another device is possible BUT certainly NOT the AXIM X50 & X51 line !!!
no wondered we get sidetracked & takes long to troubleshoot the problem !!!
to get back ontrack ... yes ! ... I've managed to sync my X51V VIA bluetooth ... no problem... it is possible ! ;)
