Problems recognizing Dell Axim 51v in Windows XP

Hey guys!

Hope you can help me out with this.

I am running Active Sync 4.1 and have a Dell Axim 51v (ROM A04). The trouble appears when I connect the Axim to USB cradle. It says it finds a new USB device. Recognizing it as a Dell Axim 51v and then changes to a Windows Mobile Device. Everything looks great. The I get a message saying that a problem occured while installing the USB device and it may not work. And it does not work. I tried deleting the device and reinstalling, reinstalled ActiveSync, Hard-Resetted the device, ran Windows Update, no anti-virus software or firewalls running. This drives me crazy that I can't figure this out.

btw. It works on another computer running Active Sync 4.1 so it is obviously a computer specific thing.

Any suggestions??

Thanks
Henning

Have you tried:

1. Another USB port?
2. If you have more than one or two USB devices already, maybe you need a powered USB hub?

Similar issue here-

FWIW-
I JUST installed ActiveSync 4.1 on a new Win XP Pro machine and had the very same issue--It was working then the sync somehow broke while attempting to install the latest ROM update...I simply hit the DELETE MOBILE DEVICE, removed the X51V from the cradle, rebooted the PC, placed the device back into the cradle and allowed the software to re-establish the connection---works fine now--
PS- I've yet to upgrde to the latest ROM---I'm still at A01.

I had the same problem but it definitely was USB port on computer problem. Make sure your USB port on computer is functioning properly also you may wish to simply test your USB cable that came with Dell on different machine.

I'm having exactly the same issue. I'm A01 and it's a brand spanking new unit. I see postings for A04. How do you get that. I've looked on Dell's site, but don't see it. Would it help with this problem?

Thanks. I'll try to check this. The strange thing is that it worked fine with A01, but not with A04. This tells me that the USB port is ok and the cable is ok. But it might be that it got damaged. I'll try this and cross my fingers.

Thanks
Henning

Finally it worked. I was using the miniSync from Boxwave and that obviously did not work. I tried with the regular Axim cradle and suddenly it synced fine. Beats me. A friend of mine uses his Axim 50v with the miniSync and that workes fine. All of a sudden upgrading from A01 to A04 makes the miniSync not work. Seems strange. Anyone else with the same problem??

I have exactly the same issue with my X51v ( french version with ROM A00 ) and my computer under XP-SP2.
I haven't tried on another computer.
I tried all things given on microsoft site ( configuration of Firewall, ... ) : no result
I discovered that the issue seems to be in the installation of the drivers ( network card ) but always same result : PC boots ! Even under SafeMode with XP, the answer is on the X51v screen : something like "no possibility of getting an address" !
I hope somebody will have the answer.

Hi,

i got the same error when I came back from holidays with my brand new x51v. :)
for me the solution was a new download of activesync. it is still called 4.1 (according to MS website), but this time during setup it also installed a patch for the USB drivers.
i deleted the active-sync partnership and the already found WinMobile device in device manager, redocked the axim and this time it immediately got an IP address and started syncing.
