ActiveSync fix, incompatible with Norton SystemWorks Internet Worm Protection

I noticed yesterday that Internet Worm Protection was disabled in my Norton SystemWorks. I turned it back on, only to find that my ActiveSync no longer worked. It would recognize the handheld, but would just say it is "looking for changes" but never progressed. It does "see" my Axim. It says it's connected. The green wheel icon thing is spinning, it says it's "looking for changes." But after five minutes or so it stops and says it's having trouble reconnecting.

Turns out, it is clear Internet Worm Protection is the culprit: when I turned off Worm Security again, it works fine. Turn it on, and it will not sync. I'm guessing WM5 probably disabled it when I installed it.

If this is indeed a problem, it would have to specifically be for WM5. I am running PPC2003se and Worm protection is on under Norton Systemworks 2006. I did run WM5 for a while, was successfully able to sync, and I don't remember worm protection being off.

This may help you.

Posted under ActiveSync forum Dec 7/05:

I found that it was Internet Worm Protection within Norton Antivirus 2006 that was causing my connection problems (Activesync 4.1 WM5 A04) - I just go into Norton and turn this off, place the Axim X51V in the cradle and it makes a connection (which makes me feel good when things work properly).

I have written Norton to ask them what a more permanent fix or how to properly change the settings so that I don't have to manually make the change to Internet Worm Protection each time I want to sync.

Hope that helps.

Yes. Absolutely correct. That was my original post, in fact. No question: ActiveSync will not work with Internet Worm Protection on, at least not in WM5, ActiveSync 4.1. I use A01.

Thanks for directing this to Symantec. How does one get feedback to Microsoft on this issue?
