memory leak draining 0.01mb per second

Hey,

I have a x51v with A06 rom. quite a bit of things installed but only ilauncher and magic button running. my memory will start off at 30mb approximately and usage will increase by about 0.01mb every second. I cant find what causes this because it does not happen all the time. Something happens and triggers the drain but I cannot be sure what it is.

Here is a list of things i have installed:
VJBaseHue
webis mail 2
magic button
spb full screen keyboard
resco ftp add-in
resco explorer
resco audio recorder
opera
phatpad
wisbar advance (not running at all)
memaid
remoteamp
pocketmusic
netfront
microsoft voice command (not running)
calendar+ today plugin (running)
pocket informant
ilauncher
TCPMP
total commander
tengo thumb
tweaks2k2

today plugins running:
tasks
ilauncher
calendar+

does anybody have any problems with any of the above listed programs in terms of memory leakage? or any idea what could cause this?

I really dont wanna have to hardreset it.

Thanks

let me add that when the leak occurs, memaid cannot get a list of running programs at all and it seems as if the unit is on standby, the leak stops.

i have found out that as soon as i activate tengo thumb the mem leak starts. I wonder if a reinstall of tengo thumb would fix it... any other ideas? i've already contacted the maker as well. Can anyone recreate this issue?

Memory leaks are a programming bug (usually) in an application. I'd say
the answer is don't run Tengo Thumb until you get a patch. Usually stopping
the application and restarting it will clear the leak and return the gobbled memory, unless it's in a global resource or the app has triggered
a hidden leak in the OS somewhere. If that happens then the only cure is
a soft reset (reboot).

BTW - it states very clearly on the TenGO site - PPC2003 support and does NOT list the X51v or WM5 as supported platforms.

actually it said it did support WM5... heres a paste...

Features (v1.03)
VGA SUPPORT
Very cool and skinnable graphics featuring thumb sized keys
Using the award winning TenGOTM core engine
Easy input of Apostrophe words
Easy access to numbers using Press and Hold
A short TenGO Tutorial that lets a new user pick up TenGO quickly in six easy steps.
PPC 2003/WM5, including Phone Edition
Free 14 days Full Featured Trial

But then again i have seen other bugs with tengo thumb on WM5 so i dont think they did any extensive testing with the new OS.

I'm just wondering if anybody else has this issue in case its a combination of tengo thumb and another program that i have installed and might possibly not need as much.

Thanks tho.

Hmmm You are right, on one line of one web page it does state WM5.
Funny how the other distributers haven't updated thier web pages yet that I could find.

My apology for doubting you. I still think it's the culprit...

Of your list here's the ones I've played with or am using:
magic button <- use all the time no problem
resco ftp add-in <- tried earlier version (November time) had problems
resco explorer <- used this for a while no problems
opera <- use all the time
phatpad <- used older version had problems
(understand there's a new release, haven't tried it)
wisbar advance (not running at all) <- used earlier version not WM5 big problems
netfront <- used for while no problems, switched to opera
pocket informant <- use all the time
ilauncher <- had trouble with ilaunch switched to claunch
TCPMP <- caused grief, older version
total commander <- used for a while, no problems
tweaks2k2 <- used free version no problems

Does that help?

yea that helps alot and now that I've had time to mess around with it... I'm pretty sure thats the case as well but not that many people seem to use tengo thumb... and i dont blame them since the developers havent updated their software in a long time.

What do you usually use to input stuff real fast? tengo thumb was handy since i could type in quick stuff like "bio midterm" in a matter of seconds without having to use both hands. I have spb full screen keyboard but that rotates the screen and requires that i type most of the letters.

Thanks

Iuse a combo of the built in keyboard (slow and picky) and
just writing (in draw mode for notes), I tried the transcribe
and it's too unreliable for doing in a rush. I even went back to
my 4th grade penmenship medal method of writing and it still messes it
up half the time.... I wish the thumb software would work as well, you
peaked my interest, but after a brief trial and having two softresets from
it ... bye.. won't buy until it's fixed.

well, I didnt need to softreset much until i found out it was sucking up all my ram. I'll let you know when they get that thing fixed if they ever do get fixed. I like it cuz it reminds me of T9 for the cell... works well when u gota punch in something quick like "bio midterm tuesday" and it doesnt even need to be caps or anything...

so far so good without mem leaks without tengo thumb... so yup thats the culprit...

the developers havent emailed me back about that either... i wonder if they even read my email.

I actually contacted the makers when I saw this issue on my x51v. Enclosed is their response:

Thanks for your interests in TenGO and feedback. Will assist you as best as I can here.

After some testing, we found that the memory leak only occurs in the Dell Axim x51v. It is somehow related to how their ROM build manage programs using dynamic MFC library (as in the case for TenGO). We are now in the process of trying to rectify this and will keep you updated.

sweet!! I guess they got tired of people asking them. I havent heard anybody mention it so I sent them a few emails with the symptoms and my findings and such.

Nonetheless, I'm glad they're working on it.
Thanks GoSix for clarifying it.

Sounds like a slow puncture. Stick it under water and look for bubbles.

Cool

Just got a follow-up from them...I just got the e-mail this morning...haven't installed 1.04 yet.

UPDATED....Just installed and tested it. I'm watching the memory and seeing no leak! yay! I don't see the new rev on their site yet. :(

-----------------------
Some good news. We have the new TenGO Thumb v1.04 ready that should rectify the memory leak for the Dell Axim x51v.

I have attached it here for your advance preview. Please rename the file from .e_x_e to .exe and install as per normal. Also, remember to uninstall the previous version first by first selecting another input method (e.g. default keyboard) and soft resetting (to ensure the database is not in use).

Hope the above addresses your problem. Please feel free to email me should you have any further questions or enquiries and I will be happy to help in any way possible. Thanks.

Regards,

Edwin
