Return it or not?

I got my X51v on Tuesday and spent Tuesday and Wednesday trying to get it to sync via the cradle with my home laptop unsuccessfully. Not too much support from Dell in the process but they did finally communicate via email and shipped me a new unit that arrived today and is waiting at FedX. At work today my IT guy got the first unit connected to the WIFI and to the Exchange server and I can sync now to Outlook just fine plus connect there and at home to the WIFI networks.

So here is my dilemma. Should I send the replacement back and just forget about the cradle sync issue which might have as much to do with the cradle, the ActiveSync, my laptop or my stupidity as with the AXIM and just be very happy that everything else seems to work excellently or should I keep the new one and try to get it working in the cradle? It seems to me that I found a lot here and at Dell regarding the cradle sync problem and it may be as much my settings as the unit but does this problem hide a deeper problem in the AXIM that otherwise works well?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would try the new unit in the cradle and see what happens. If it works in the craddle, your IT guy should be able to help you setup the new unit w/ wifi, then send the old one back. However if the new unit has the same problems... you can just keep the old one and try to figure out what the problem is.

Just do a hard reset before you send either one back to get rid of all your entered info.

I had the same sync issue and found it was a firewall not allowing activesync to connect. I kept the new refurbished one. Even though my 51v was two weeks old the Refurb had a newer number and bios. My old one had more issues. It's been about a week now and no issues other than email being really slow.

if a hard reset doesn't help, try 2 things.

uninstall activesync, and follow the install directions to the "T"... can't remember em myself, but I know some installs will tell you when to plug the cradle in, if you do it too soon then windows will F up the drivers.

other thing to check, which happened to me recently. is the plug connected to the PC or do you have a USB hub? sometimes the hub will mess up activesync. (happened to me when I flashed rom to A06, and now I must plug into my PC port, and not the hub or it won't see the axim)

If you installed correctly, and its not a firewall or hub issue... then I hope the new axim works, or it might be the cradle itself.

Return the order. Everyone return your orders. If you want dell to do something to fix the Bluetooth and other issues send you devices back. Maybe if they see 1000s of devices coming back and their profit margin declining they will do something about their horrible customer service and bad platform issues. If you dont have a working platform out of the box why sell it and have the public fix it for you. (DELL).

We dont get paid to fix your products. Im sending mine back and I hope that everyone that wants satisfaction will send theirs back also. Please email me at tmatney98@comcast.net if you would like more details. I will try to get back to every email that I get in as timely a manner as I can. Please email me. It is crucial that you do.

Well, I picked up the new 51v at FedX and now I sit in front of the PC and still no sync. The new one works the same as the first.

I purchased the travel kit so thinking the issue might be the cradle I connected directly to the AXIM from the USB and still got the same result. With respect to firewalls, the only ones that I know I have are in XP and on the WIFI. I disconnected the PC from the network and the XP was already disabled, still no sync. I have Norton Anti Virus but not the firewall. Also, most of the comments that I read here and elsewhere regarding the firewall and the USB sync issue created timeout errors. When I plug in I get a "CONNECTING" message and watching from network connections I see the PC and AXIM slowly passing packets back and forth. I also get an IP so that seems to be ok and I know that was another related problem. I do get a connection error message in ActiveSync on the AXIM with a support code 0x85020006 that tells me to check my connection settings.

Perhaps it is my stupidity too. Let me ask what I should expect from this connection. ActiceSync aside, shouldn't the AXIM look like a mobile storage device to the PC from My Computer and allow me to look at the files and to drag and drop from or to it and another location? That is kind of what I see from the AXIM screen when I IR to the laptop. I do see the AXIM as a mobille device from My Computer but I can't access anything or open the folder.

I am beginning to suspect that the problem may lie in either settings or other incompatibilities in the 5 year old Toshiba. I guess I shoud next try to connect to another computer.

My biggest concern with the AXIM is to be able to sync to the Exchange Server at work so that my Outlook is up to date which I can do just fine with WIFI. My next concern is to be able to transfer a few files now and then that I need on the AXIM or ones that I might create on the AXIM and need to transfer elsewhere. I can do that through cards, email, IR, and other ways so what am I really missing if I can't get the USB to function, transfer speed? The speed now isn't a huge issue as it is better than I had with no AXIM.

I guess the only other issue that I have is that I have not successfully set up my VPN, but that may be a whole 'nother topic in the future.

Again thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer.

Dave

I would suggest to plug it into another computer.

I had problems getting my Axim to sync out of the box but as soon as I turned off my firewall and virus protection, it worked. After it sync'd for the first time I turned everything back on and have had no problems.

My only problem is that my reminders and alarms don't work?

I must say that the learning curve on my axim was very steep. I've had numerous problems with it until I tried the "fake" server.
The problems were:
1. very poor response time that was not only painful but rendered my unit utterly "useless"
2. system crashes which required the soft reset to switch on the unit &
3. random activation of the autosync program.
I've had my unit changed on 3 occasions by Dell coz' the technical support does not seem to know what's the problem. They attribute it to the MW5 and other software compatibility issue. I suppose that there's some truth in that but the main culprit causing the problems I believe is the autosync program. It is ludicrous for Microsoft to disable the sychronization schedule on the Autosync. I must thank the contributors to come out with the "fake" server solution coz' my X51v now works exceptionally well! The other application I thought was useful is the Magic Button. To the creators of this freeware and the member who introduced it on this forum...Thanks
I hope this feedback helps..
