Activesync not connecting -- and solution
All,
Got my new 51v the other day . . . could not get it to connect via Activesyc to my laptop (Thinkpad T42 running XP sp2) via the usb. After a couple of hours of trying various things (firewall issues, for example), I found this thread:
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/acti...connection.htm
Aha. Time to walk through the setup in a systematic way and check to make sure everything happened as it was supposed to. Well, looking at the services installed in the Local Area Connection for the Axim , TCP/IP had been installed but was not active (box was not checked). Check the box, close, and voila, Activesync recongizes the handheld and syncs.
Hadn't seen this covered as a cause in any of the various threads on activesync problems . . . but thought I might not be the only one with this issue. Maybe this will help someone else.
Regards,
Tom

Ok folks,
I am in dire need of help.
I have two Axims. One an X30H and the 2 day old X51v. Never had a problem with the X30, still do not. It connects and synchs with my home computer, transfers and updates all files and info.
The X51 does not transfer files and PIM info. I can instal programs to the 51 and explore the device from the home computer. There are no new programs installed yet and I have hard reset once, then tried to re-establish a connection.
The ROM is A06. Activesync is 4.1. I have posted in several areas about my problems and cannot solve my problem. TIA

Where to find Local Area Connection
I am having problems with one computer seeing my Axim. I noted your fix and am wondering where to find this information on the computer. I am running Windows XP.

network connections control panel
with the axim connected its in your "Network Connections" control panel.
you can do start -> control panel -> Network Connections
(or Network and Internet Connections then Network Connections in category view)
it will sometimes show up as a LAN connection named "Windows mobile device"
right click it and you can access the properties.
(also check http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/ )

Some progress made.
It seems as though something in Zonealarm was partially to blame. I allowed for certain features of activesync to be allowed to pass the firewall.
Although the activesync screen on the ppc now shows that a synchronization has taken place I am still not able to sync outlook items such as any PIM data. The "view status" when clicked gives the following code:
Synchronization Error 85010014
From the MS ActiveSync troubleshooter:
"... reports a Synchronization Error code 85010014 because of one of the following reasons:
* Synchronization Fails because Application Data Folder is Redirected
* Synchronization Fails because Outlook is in Offline Mode
* Synchronization Fails because of Outlook script blocking
* Synchronization Fails because ActiveSync is incorrectly registered with Outlook
Now I don't know what to do. So close, yet so far
Any ideas?
p.s. I re-installed 4.1 too. No joy.

Thanks TomL - was trying to work out why I couldn't connect WM5 Axim to my PC via the dock (where I can via IR to my laptop) - will have a look at this (and probably check my firewall for the processes)

I am getting the error code "85010014" referenced on Tom's site linked above.
I am unsure how to allow AS via my Norton Antivirus. I opened it and it does not show a way to allow one particular program.
If I uninstall Outlook and reinstal, will I lose all my PIM information?
I am running XP, Outlook 2002, AS 4.1
Any help is appreciated.

I had that error and still get it occasionally now but here is how I fixed it:
removepda from cable/cradle. go into AS on the desktop and delete the relationship for the name you currently use. soft reset the pda and before putting it back on the cradle/cable in AS on the desktop go to file>connection settings and when it opens hit the 'connect' button. it will open up the get connected box. connect your pda and let it re-establish the relationship. after that if that error shows up again all i have had to do to fix it is soft rset the pda. hope this helps.

I had a problem connecting through the cradle with my X51v and I found an 'answer' though it is more of a workaround.
When I tried to synch, I would get the green synch symbol spinning round forever and a day saying 'Connecting' but it never actually succeeding in connecting. So, I right-click the ActiveSynch symbol in my tray, select 'Connection settings...' and de-check 'Allow USB Connections' and close the window down. Then I do exactly the same again and re-check the same box. Le voila!
Don't ask me why it works but it does. I have just download ActiveSynch 4.1 to replace version 4 so who knows, maybe that will save me having to do that every time I first connect (only happens first time after booting up computer, subsequnet synchs on same day are fine) but I won't hold my breath.
Now, anyone wanna tell me why my X51v can't seem to talk with my BT GPS receiver? <going bald here on this one!>
Cheers,
Rob

I got my X51v yesterday and had the same problem but finally solved it. Of course this Microsoft crap is all to blame. A normal piece of software would allow you to sync contacts, email, and favorites with any PIM manager. But Activesync forces you to only sync with MS products like Outlook and then doesn't work.
First I got the spinning green sync symbol that went on forever without sync-ing. I was running Zone Alarm and google searches told me that might be the problem. So I uninstalled Zone Alarm and got further into the sync but then got the dreaded support code 85010014 message that seems to have caused tremendous heachache across the Win CE world on all sorts of devices that use Activesync.
I discerned that is was probably a problem with Outlook, despite the fact that 3 days ago my old X5 running an older version of Activesync was sync-ing perfectly with outlook since day one.
I uninstalled and re-installed outlook and deleted the mobile device partnership from both Activesync on the PC and on the Axim. Still got the problem.
Then I read on MS site that the problem sometimes arises when Outlook is not the default mail program. I normally run Firefox and Thunderbird instead of Outlook and Explorer but I still have all my contacts and calendar in Outlook. So I went into my outlook settings and made Outlook my default program for everything.
Voila!
Now I have sync.
I have no idea what exactly I did but now it works.

Turned out to be my Outpost Firewall settings blocking BOOTP from Activesync 4.1 to the Axim (WM5). After following a link on the Outpost User Support site, I added the suggested rules and now both PC (XPSP2) and x50v communicate happily.:yeah:

I think I have tried everything other than the pst fix. I don't know where or what files might be the problem so I can't do the pst outlook fix.
As it is now, I am ready to send it back.
My X30 still connects without any problem.
Anybody?

ActiveSync: Limited size of files? My sync locked up.
Hello to All and Texasdiver: I switched from Palm m515 after it died (shorted out the thing on car keys), and now have an Axim x51. I installed MS Outlook 2003 a few days ago. It seems to ActiveSync just fine, including pictures and MS Word docs. However, I just bought Chapura's Pocket Copy for transfer from Palm desktop to MS Outlook. That was this morning, it seemed to transfer the info from the Palm desktop to MS Outlook (I did not check the files, but all seemed to transfer -- there were several thousand files). The problem is that when I hooked up my x51 it started to ActiveSync but now is synching Memos and seems to be stopped and holding at a Status indication of 555/2398. I left it on while I went to the office hoping it might be doing things in the background...
My question might be: Is there a limit to the size of the Memo files transferred? Some were long and I wonder if Axim has a limit to the size of the files that is different than the Palm OS allowed.
Also: Is there a limit to the number of Memo files that the Axim will allow? 555 is a low number for what I need: I have cultivated 10 years of Memos, creating a large database by using Categories and nested memo titles.
Thanks for any help. I just signed up and this is my first Axim post, you were on a very active thread and maybe you can answer this because your data shows you are an old-timer on the forum.
