I have an x51v with ROM A06, with Pocket Informant being the only installed third party software. A soft reset takes in excess of 50 seconds to do, more than twice as long as my X30 (and my X30 has tons of software installed). Is this normal?
Also, the system often hangs, requiring a soft reset, but with such a slow reset process, it's really frustrating!
By the way, I have done the activesync tweak, which made the system more stable, but not enough.
Just like you i moved from my super-fast x30h to this slow cumbersome x51v. The h/ware seems fine but it must be WM5? It takes twice as long to do anything on the unit and it seems to be SO bug-ridden. Thank god for sprite backup!!!
are you talking about booting up takes 50 some secs? It is normal. You don't reboot everytime you use your pda. Don't turn it off completely when you hit the power button. Just set it as standby. Then, you will be fine. Mine is solid stable without any issue. I am very happy with it.

Thanks for the responses. A few days ago I decided to bite the bullet and call Dell. They were the ones that suggested exchanging the x51v for another one, and a couple of days later I had a refurbished one and could compare. I backed up my old one, and restored to the new PDA. A lot better, I'll say, but still not as zippy as my old trusty X30H. Anyway, I'm delighted to say that the Dell technician was very helpful in solving my problem.
I have applied fake server fix, run only essential programes in foreground and use Spb Pocket Plus 3.1 so x really closes an app not just minimising it, yet the thing only crawls.
My old iPaq 3850 with a processor speed of nothing and a quarter the memory is still better!
Is it normal to wait up to 10 sec after a screen tap to move around between appointments in Calendar?

Write down the numbers of your service tag and express service code (you'll find them after removing the battery), then get in touch with Dell Customer Service by phone and let them know your problem. More than likely you will be offered an exchange whereby they'll send you another unit (the one I got was marked "refurbished" but was nevertheless perfect) after which you return your present Axim. There seem to be lots of "lemons" out there!
Do you have the Odyssey client in use? I gather that stopping this makes things go quicker.
Yes - startup from soft reset is a little slow, but you should only need to soft reset about once a month and not everyday.
Once it has started, it responds smoothly and quickly to button taps - UNLESS the memory is all used up. This happens on mine when I press the record button. This creates a file in the Notes section that takes all the memory up. Delete all voice recordings and see if its better.
No Odyssey client loaded, absolutely nothing loaded after hard reset and still it's dead slow.
I've spend post of the last week trying to deal with Dell customer support, since the Axim arrived and didn't work as expected straight out ot the box.
Dead email links on their support sites, failure to respond to email requests for assistance (except for automated reply "yes we have your email, yes we'll reply in <24 hours, - but oh no you don't") and then referrals to other departments who said "not me" and referred me back to the originator were very frustrating for the first 5 days.
Dell Customer Service ain't what it once was, or am I too critical?
Now at last I have someone interested who is at least replying to emails and trying to help but I'm not optimistic she'll solve the problem.
We're past fake server fix, past turn off everything else and load nothing except Calendar, past hard reset (no solution), and moving towards download and install latest ROM A06 though why I've no idea as SYSINFO SHOWS AXIM CAME WITH IT PREINSTALLED.
I think I have a "lemon" alright but why?
Is it that WM 5.0 can't read flash memory or the memory/hardware is at fault.
Either way Dell/MS really need to get their act together as they're still selling Axims that are not functional PDAs.
All I know is I currently have a desktop paperweight with a lovely VGA deep blue screen, shiny piano black cover, super Wi-Fi but it's unusable as a simple Calendar / Contact PDA even before I add my Agenda Fusion or Pocket Informant as a front end to built in PIM databases.
Will give reinstall/reflash A06 a go but if no joy it's new iPaq time or even Palmone Lifedrive time (one I tried for 24 hours absolutely flies)
You should really demand that Dell replace your unit. It's not right that a customer should have to do all kinds of trouble-shooting, even with a machine with no third party software installed. Insist that they replace!
CPU is automatic, I even forced it to 624 but no joy.
Weirdest solution though today
I downloaded Pocket Informant loaded it and BINGO!
Its version of Calendar suddenly flies whereas WM5.0s build in version doesn't work. Both read same database files (PIM.vol I think), one can the other can't.
Weird, now anything I throw at Axim is fine, if it behaves for the next few days it maybe won't be going back to Dell after all!
